RedHawks Have Their Backs Against the Wall After Tough Loss
Quotes from Tuesday's weekly press conference
Sept. 13, 2005
In regards to last Saturday's loss ...
"The sun has come up the last three days, and we get to practice today, so I guess we're back to business as usual. Obviously we're disappointed with our performance Saturday. It came down to a field goal to win the game, but we shouldn't have been put in that position. We had a number of chances to put the game away in the first and third quarters, but we didn't execute well."
"Everyone is upset, but there's no time to feel sorry for ourselves. We lost a game we could have won, but there's nothing we can do about that now except learn from our mistakes. We need to play better, and our seniors need to lead the way. We're not playing up to our ability. This isn't the kind of league where you can expect to just line up and win games."
"We're going to stay the course. We need to believe in what we're doing and believe in ourselves. That's what we're going to do. We're going to keep playing and playing hard. We're going to get our confidence back, and we're going to take off from there. We're a different team this week. Our back is against the wall."
"We have to keep our heads up. The seniors need to step up and lead this team. There is still a lot to play for. Our backs our against the wall, and we need to come out swinging."
In regards to the defense ...
"It was not the kind of trademark defensive game you expect at Miami. We gave up too many big plays, and there were too many missed tackles. We need to be more aggressive. We can't be waiting for things to happen, we have to make things happen out there."
"We're in the position to make plays, we're just not making them. We need to adjust things so we're not leaving our defensive backs out on an island all the time, and we have to start making plays."
In regards to the offense ...
"The offense was better this week, but we still settled for too many field goals when we could have scored touchdowns. It was an overall better game than the one we played at Ohio State, but we need to keep getting better every week. We need to be more consistent."
In regards to team depth ...
"Most of our second-team guys didn't get the chance to play at Ohio State, so Saturday was the first game action for a lot of them. We have to keep bringing them along quickly. We've got guys who have practiced well enough to play, and we need to get them in there. You're going to see more substitutions early on Saturday. We need to keep guys fresh."
In regards to Kent State ...
"Kent State led the conference last year in defense, and they've got a lot of guys back. Offensively, they're going to throw the ball. They've got a quarterback who is a big, pocket passer, and they're going to line up three or four wide against us. It's a different type of threat than we've faced with the Josh Cribbs Kent State teams in the past or even than what we faced last week against Central Michigan."
On the team's improved turnover margin ...
"Turnovers are something we really stressed in the preseason. If we don't turn it over, we know we can move the ball. It helps preserve field position and prevents momentum shifts in games. Josh has done well protecting the ball and making good decisions. On the flip side, our defense needs to be creating more turnovers, and I know they have the ability to do that."
