Cranberry Township, Pa. - The Rock was selected as the fifth-place team in the preseason poll of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division head coaches.
The PSAC office announced the preseason poll Monday as part of the annual media day event at the Regional Learning Alliance at Cranberry Woods.
Slippery Rock University hosted the event for the second successive year and fifth time in the last six seasons.
Defending PSAC-West tri-champion Edinboro was the preseason pick of the divison's coaches to win the 2005 title.
California earned the No. 2 spot, followed by Indiana, Shippensburg, The Rock, Clarion and Lock Haven.
Edinboro, Indiana and Shippensburg shared the PSAC-West title in 2004 with identical 5-1 marks in division play.
The Rock and California shared fourth place a year with 2-4 marks, while Clarion and Lock Haven tied for sixth place with 1-5 ledgers.
East Stroudsburg, the No. 2 finisher a year ago, is the preseason pick to win the PSAC-Eastern Division title in voting by that division's head coaches.
Defending division champion West Chester earned the No. 2 spot, followed by Bloomsburg, Millersville, Kutztown, Mansfield and Cheyney.
The Rock will travel to Bloomsburg for the season-opening game Aug. 27 and hosts Millersville in SRU's homecoming game on Oct. 15.
SRU, under the guidance of 18th-year head coach Dr. George Mihalik, will open preseason camp on Thursday.
The Rock, which welcomes back 33 letterwinners and 11 starters from last year's squad, is coming off a second successive 4-7 season and looks to regain the form that resulted in 12 successive winning seasons from 1991-2002.
SRU won four successive PSAC-West titles from 1997 to 2000, including three straight undisputed crowns from 1997 to 1999.
