Rock rolls to 58-28 win over Shippensburg

Slippery Rock, Pa. - Josh Kniess rushed for 172 yards and scored three touchdowns Saturday afternoon to lead hosting Slippery Rock University to a 58-28 win over Shippensburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division action.
The win improved The Rock's record to 4-5 overall and 3-2 in PSAC-West action. Shippensburg fell to 4-6, 2-4,
Kniess had rushing touchdowns of 13 and five yards and also scored on an 80-yard punt return. He finished the day with 310 all-purpose yards (22-172 rushing, 1-21 pass receiving, 5-110 punt returns and 1-7 kickoff returns).
In the process, Kniess became SRU's career leader in all-purpose yardage (see notes below).
Rock quarterback Nate Crookshank finished with 190 total yards (105 yards and two TDs passing, 85 yards and one TD rushing.
Crookshank, who completed 9 of 17 passes and threw one interception, ran for an 11-yard TD and hooked up with Paul Favers for a 35-yard TD.
Defensively, Akeem Etheridge (40 yards) and Matt Fontana (48 yards) returned interceptions for touchdowns to lead a four-interception, three-sack effort by The Rock defense. Cory Lacek led SRU with 10 tackles, including two QB sacks.
The total offense numbers were deceiving as SRU held a slim 393-375 advantage. The Rock rushed for 276 yards on 43 attempts and had 117 yards passing, while Shippensburg had 219 yards rushing on 42 attempts and 156 yards passing.
David Richards rushed for 109 yards to lead the Shippensburg attack.
The Rock travels to Clarion and Shippensburg hosts West Chester next Saturday in the respective team's season finales.
Notes: Josh Kniess moved ahead of D.J. Flick (4794 yards) on the career all-purpose yardage list. In his four-year career, Kniess has rushed for 3254 yards, gained 134 yards on pass receptions, 894 yards on punt returns and 561 yards on kickoff returns ... His two rushing TDs vs. Shippensburg improved his 2005 total to 12, one shy of his career-best mark set a year ago ... Kniess recorded the sixth punt-return TD of his career when he took one a career-best 80 yards "to the house" vs. Shippensburg on Saturday ... With three TDs on Saturday, Kniess took over sole possession of third place on SRU's career TDs list with 43 (30 of which have come in the last two seasons). He needs two TDs in the season finale at Clarion to move into second place ... Kniess' total of 258 career points ranks fourth all-time at SRU.
