TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida State wide receiver Lorne Sam will not be available for the Seminoles when they play West Virginia in the Gator Bowl on Jan. 1.
Sam had surgery in his left foot Nov. 23 for a stress fracture he played with for much of the season.
Following practice Saturday, the Seminoles' first in preparation for the Mountaineers, Sam said there is no chance he could play.
Because the No. 17 Seminoles are not in the Bowl Championship Series, Sam and the team decided on surgery so he could be ready for next season.
"We were going to base it off if we went to a BCS bowl or not," Sam said.
A boot on his foot is expected to come off in mid-January and Sam said he should be available when spring practice begins in March.
Sam had six receptions for 71 yards this year.
