South Carolina: Wednesday's Practice Report

Spurrier's Post-Practice Quotes

Oct. 12, 2005

The South Carolina Gamecock football squad worked out on Wednesday afternoon, their final practice session before taking a few days off for the fall break. The final 20 minutes of practice featured a scrimmage between the non-regular players. With an open weekend, the Gamecocks will not return to the practice field until late Sunday afternoon. Following the two-hour workout, Head Coach Steve Spurrier addressed the media:

"The offense won the scrimmage. Cade Thompson threw some good ones, but Jared Cook was probably the most valuable player. I think he caught a couple of touchdowns.

His advise to his team for the break: "Be safe. Be careful who you ride with. Be safe. Everybody come back in one piece. No car accidents - things of that nature.

On whether the open date helps recharge the team's batteries: "I don't know. We'll find out when we play Vandy. If we play our best game of the year, we'll say the open date helped us. If we play the way we've been playing, we'll say the open date didn't mean anything.

On where Syvelle Newton is during the meetings: "We all met together today, the quarterbacks, tight ends, running backs and receivers, watching practice tape from yesterday. But he's been with the running backs part of the time and then with us (quarterbacks) part of the time. He's learning a little bit more about the tailback. We've got him ready to go for all three."
