STANFORD, Calif. -- Tom Hayes, a longtime college coach who also spent five years as an assistant with the Washington Redskins, was hired Monday to be defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Stanford.
Hayes had previously been defensive coordinator at UCLA, Oklahoma and Kansas in more than three decades as a coach.
"We are fortunate to have someone of Tom's caliber join our staff," coach Walt Harris said. "He brings with him experience and knowledge of the 3-4 defense, which we are committed to here at Stanford, and a record of success."
Hayes most recently coached at Kansas in 2001, where he was defensive coordinator and secondary coach before being named interim head coach for the final three games of the season.
Hayes spent five seasons as secondary coach for the Redskins from 1995-99. He was defensive coordinator at Oklahoma from 1991-94 and co-defensive coordinator at UCLA from 1982-88. He also was secondary coach at UCLA in 1980-81 and helped the Bruins win three Rose Bowls during his stint.
