2006 Nathan's Coney Island Hot Dog Eating World Championship
Well, Takeru Kobayashi (Japan) has won the 2006 Nathan's World Championship Coney Island Hot Dog eating contest. This was the most exciting contest since Kobayashi has entered the competition, with Joey Chestnut (USA) at first pulling out in front with a substantial lead in the beginning. Chestnut stayed ahead of the champion until the last three minutes of the 12 minute free for all. Kobayashi finished with 53 and three quarters hot dogs, with Chestnut coming in second with 52.
Is this a sport? I believe so. These folks have to train their bodies to consume large amounts of food within a short period of time. Not only do they have to stretch their stomachs, but they have to train their throats and muscles to allow large chunks of food to flow down without choking, not to mention the mental discipline to eat the amount of food, and sometimes, the types of food to win these competitions.

Tough ? but these guys take their trade seriously and train like crazy. As an earlier poster mentioned, if poker is a sport then competitive eating is as well.

This requires training, physical and mental endurance, toughness, competitive spirit and probably some talent to start. I definitely think its a sport, in the same way that the horizontal mambo qualifies.

The difference being you're not projectile vomiting after the 'zontal mambo............well, at least you shouldn't be.
