Why MLB isn't what it was
If you, like me, have all but lost interest in MLB, which reason is the most significant?
Welcome to the St. Louis Rams!

Major League Baseball was by far my favorite sport as a kid, when there were teams with specific personalities, meaningful stats, tradition, colorful characters and a kind of all-american purity. None of that is really left anymore and the game has become corporate, mechanical and boring.

Re: Why MLB isn't what it was
I can tell you the exact moment I lost interest. It was the day my favorite athlete of all-time (tied with Jack Youngblood) - Cal Ripken, Jr. - retired. Even before then, my interest was waining, but at least I could follow Cal's career.
Now, I'm satisfied to just watch my current favorite athletes - Torry Holt, Isaac Bruce, Marc Bulger (not to mention Dwyane Wade, Shaquille O'Neal and Alonzo Mourning) play football and basketball.Last edited by AvengerRam; -05-30-2006 at 12:44 AM.

I don't think it has lost interest. Look at the attendance levels, they seem to be increasing if not steady.

Re: Why MLB isn't what it was
Baseball is thriving right now with the HR era and Pujols chase for the record. Attendence is up especially in the NL and interleague play and the wild card have made MLB exciting down to the wire.

Re: Why MLB isn't what it was
The NFL has surpassed MLB as America's Game, I'll give y'all that. However, I don't think interest has really waned.
Avenger's area for example. Great place for Spring Training is Florida, but has it ever been a hotbed for regular season baseball? It's almost equivalent to KC. Go to places like Boston, Atlanta, L.A., N.Y., Baltimore, and the Capital of Baseball...STL and see how the fans are. The St. Louis Cardinals are and for my lifetime always will be the talk of STL like it or not we Rams fans.

Re: Why MLB isn't what it was
In my opinion baseball was better. Who doesn't love to see guys hit home runs.
I also think the MLB might be juicing the balls so that the people who do love home runs will still see those home runs.

Re: Why MLB isn't what it was
For me, it is the steroids, although I really quit watching when the strike happened. I haven't watched a single second of hockey since their strike either. Listening to a bunch of rich dudes whine about wanting more money is nauseating to me.

Re: Why MLB isn't what it was
I for one, cannot choose any of the above options. I feel that MLB is once again peaking and is achieving great ratings and has once again established itself as a very entertaining entity among fans.

Re: Why MLB isn't what it was
I am really not interested in baseball because, well. The rich keep getting richer and the poor keep getting poorer. Every year you know which teams are going to compete and you know which teams are going to suck...and they rarely ever change. It's like the Devil Rays, Orioles, Royals, Reds, Indians, etc... are major league farms teams for the big boy (Yankees, Red Sox, et al) they just buy the talent from them. Then the smaller teams fans have to watch that player that they cultivated into the best player in the game beat the snot out of them because their team couldn't afford to pay an outrageous price and can't afford to have a 300 million dollar payroll. It pisses me off. Baseball used to be my favorite sport. I remember watching my first game at the old Kingdome in 1985, it was awesome, nothing like it. Now, well, I can barely stand it.

To be fair, not all evil robots are killers.
