2009 ClanRam Mod Mock Draft - Selection Thread
It's the return of the ClanRam Mod Mock Draft!!
For those of you who are new here (or those who are old and have forgotten), the moderators here at the Clan participate in a group two-round mock draft. We have seven moderators participating this year, and the order in which we'll pick has been drawn at random. Each moderator's name is color coded, so you should be able to tell who will be picking for what team for the first two rounds.
In this thread, the moderators will make their selections and I will update this post with the up-to-date results of how the draft is going. There will be a separate thread for discussion of the picks and the mock as a whole; please don't respond to this thread with your feedback because it will be deleted! Only moderators making their pick should post in this thread!

MARK SANCHEZ - QB - USC
I am 100% sure that most everyone here is wondering why I went with Mark Sanchez as the #1 overall pick. True, there are better players available, but Detroit is in bad shape, and it all starts with the QB. Detroit is in need of a QB for the future, and Matt Stafford is the 'popular favorite'. I see Detroit looking at someone who is more accurate on the move, and Sanchez looks to be a little better than Stafford at this time. Both Sanchez and Stafford are risky picks, but both are high reward gambles, too. Of course, Detroit won't go wrong with any pick they make - unless they draft a TE or kicker in the first round - and with Linehan on the Lion's staff, well, anything is possible.

WOW...The Rams are in a scramble after the Sanchez pick!! - - The phones are ringing off the hook!
I believe that it is in the best interest of the Rams to trade this pick and move down a few spots and the get the most out of the return. I believe the Rams true target in this draft is Maclin out of Missouri, and if they get the chance to move down a couple of spots I believe this will be their pick. However, I do not have that option here. So...
With the second pick the St. Louis Rams pick...
The Rams have a lot of options here and the best is moving out of this position. But if they stay, and if he is there, Smith will be their pick. With so many needs (Line, WR, LB) the Rams could go Curry, Crabtree or Stafford. But the safest thing for a new coach to do is go with a blue chip. Smith is NFL ready, Curry has not been tested in the middle, Crabtree has not been a 100% for some time and Stafford will need time. Each would be somewhat of a gamble. The Rams O-Line is a work in progress and they need insurance if Barron gets a big offer next season and he becomes a free agent. The Rams are already thin at tackle, but could be in much worse shape next season if we do not address the position now.

With the third pick, the Kansas City Chiefs take...
Well, well....hmmmm I'd have to say the Kansas City Chiefs select Brian Orakpo DE Texas. It's a struggle between Curry and Orakpo, but the Chiefs were dead last in QB sacks last year and Orakpo had 11.5 sacks last season at UT. The winner of the Lombardi, Hendricks, and Nagurski awards as the best collegiate defensive player last year is too much for KC to pass up.

The Seahawks had assumed Eugene Monroe (to be the heir to Jones) would be their pick at this point. However....
....after watching the Chiefs lose their ever-lovin' minds by passing on the Best Player in the Draft, and a perfect fit for their defense, the Seahawks rush to the podium to select....
Curry joins Tatupu and Hill to make up what might be the most impressive LB corp in the NFC-West.

The Cleveland Browns need help in a lot of areas. It was very tempting to go with a playmaker for the offense (Crabtree) especially with the Browns trading away TE Kellen Winslow Jr.
It was also very tempting to go with the local kid Malcom Jenkins (CB) Ohio State.

The Browns can't apply pressure on the opposing quarterbacks. Nothing they've done in the offseason has helped their lack of pass rush. Everette Browns 20 sacks over the last two seasons couldn't be overlooked.

With the 6th selection in the 2009 NFL Draft, the Cincinnati Bengals select...
The Bengals can finally put the fiasco that was Dan Wilkinson to rest. Raji, who had a stellar final year in college, followed by eye-opening performances at the Senior Bowl and Combine, should anchor their defense for the next several years. He's big, strong, and one of the top athletes in this year's draft.

With the 7th pick in the NFL Draft, the Oakland Raiders select...
The Raiders are in a very tough spot. They were almost dead set on taking a receiver with this pick, but they really did not expect one of the top two offensive tackles to get out of the top six picks. The Raiders have to find a way to give JaMarcus Russell some better weapons, but they also need to find a way to shore up an offensive line that has been needing a new blind side tackle since Oakland missed on Robert Gallery years ago. The Raiders did sign Khalif Barnes this offseason, but it was only to a one year deal for him to compete at the position. Mario Henderson can shift to the right side. While Crabtree or Maclin are also potential picks here, Crabtree hasn't been able to work out at all because of his injury and Maclin just hasn't done enough this offseason to really overtake him. The Raiders go offense here, but probably not the offensive pick many would have thought.

With the 8th pick in the NFL draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars select...
Jacksonville has two pressing needs I see as equal: Wide Reciever and Offensive Line. With Jason Smith and Eugene Monroe off the board, the choices for the O-line aren't worthy of a top 10 pick. Andre Smith is extremely questionable at this time, and Oher would be a reach at #8. However, at Wide Reciever, we have two who are considered to be top 10 material: Crabtree and Macklin. Crabtree has a question mark hanging over him due to his recent surgery, and might not be ready to produce at the start of the season. Macklin, OTOH, would be ready to start in game 1, and has the bonus of being versatile enough to be a good return guy.

The Packers could go many directions here. They are in need on their offensive line and are switching to a 3-4 defense next season. However, many people have Jenkins as an elite player coming into the NFL and many were surprised he didn't declare last year where he could have easily been a top 10 pick. He has the potential to be a shut down corner and a starter from day one. I believe the Pack are targeting Orakpo and Brown but with both of them off the board they take the next best thing.

That teams needs weapons and with Crabtree on the board how can that team pass it up? Crabtree is one of the best WR's in the draft and is a T.O. clone without the headcase problems. No brainer here.

The Bills need a pass rusher, and though Maybin is extremely raw and will require some time, the Bills hope is the perfect Cover 2 rush man.....somewhere between Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis. The Bills run something similar to the Colts D, now they hope they've found a similar DE.

The Denver Broncos have been scouting and ranking the defensive players in this years draft that will help shore up a very weak defensive front 7.
Their draft rankings:
1. Raji (selected by the Bengals)
2. Maybin (selected by the Bills)
3. Maualuga
4. Laurinatis
5. Cushing
6. Hood
Well with the team honoring starting QB Jay Cutlers request to be traded all the preparation for improving the front 7 has been put on the back burner.
As it stands now the Broncos have QB Chris Simms and QB Darnell Hackney to fall back on if the Cutler trade happens. I don't see the Broncos picking up a starting QB in any trade scenarios. They will certainly pick-up some valuable draft picks to address the defense later in the draft.
With the 12th pick in the 2009 NFL Draft the Broncos select:

The consensus seems to be that Stafford is in fact a potential 10 year franchise starter in the NFL. He's not ready to be a starter rightaway but could certainly learn the Broncos way by observing Phil Simms for at least one year.

With the 13th pick in the NFL Draft, the Washington Redskins select:
This might seem a bit high to some, but Jackson is a very good fit for the Redskins. They invested $100 Million to shore up the interior of their D line with Albert Haynesworth, but they are still thin at DE. Jackson has the size to play DE in a 4-3 defense, and can also be rotated at UT if needed.

The New Orleans Saints had one of the best offenses in the league in 2008, finishing first in yards per game and in points per game. Yet their defense ranked 23rd in yards per game allowed and 26th in points per game allowed. Thus, the Saints know they need to shore up their defense if they want to get back into the playoff hunt. They've taken a few steps already by signing Jabari Greer and Darren Sharper to help their secondary, but they could definitely use some more help at linebacker.
Thus, with the 14th pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, the New Orleans Saints select...
Cushing is the first of a talented trio of USC linebackers off the board, and he's one of the best defensive players available at this point. He'll be an immediate upgrade over Scott Fujita as the Saints' starting strong side linebacker, and should help improve a front seven that has its hands full in a talented NFC South division.
