Re: 2009 ClanRam Mod Mock Draft - Selection Thread

With the 15th pick in the 2009 NFL draft, the Houston Texans select...

    James Laurinaitis, LB, Ohio State

Houston is in a tough spot - they are in the same conference as perennial contender Indy. 2008 found the Texans looking much better on the offense than previous years, but the defense fell short, especially in the secondary. The two top positions that need to be upgraded are safety and linebacker. Laurinaitis, at 6'3 and about 240 pounds, can cover side to side rather quickly. He has the ability to read a QB and react quickly, with an extremely fast pursuit. Stronger on pass plays than the running game, he still led the Buckeyes in tackles and interceptions in 2007. Last season, with 121 total tackles, 8.5 tackles for a loss, 5 sacks, and two interceptions, Laurinaitis once again showed his ability to be in the right place at the right time. He will bring to Houston what is desperately needed - an instant upgrade in the defense.

With the 16th pick the San Diego "Super" Chargers take...

Andre Smith - OT - Alabama

The Chargers have no glaring needs. They have the luxury of taking the best player available and Smith dropping to in their laps is just too good to resist. By taking Smith they are building depth as well a solid future for many years on the offensive line.

With the 17th pick in the NFL Draft, the New York Jets select

    Josh Freeman QB Kansas State

The Jets don't take the Broncos bait with Cutler, they are asking too much. They go with Freeman, a 6'6" QB with a gun for an arm. He may be a little unpolished but with an arm like that, poilish can be buffed. The Jets can't go into this season with the QB's that they have on the roster and Freeman could turn out to be the best out of the three QB's drafted in the first round.

With the 18th pick, the Chicago Bears select, Maryland WR, Darius Heyward-Bey.

The Bears could also go with an OT at this pick, but they appear to be working on that with free agency. Williams on one side and some combo of Omiyale, Shaffer, & maybe Pace on the other, they can get by for a little while. However, if the Bears were to play today, they would probably have to start a single WR (Hester) and a pair of TEs. They simply don't have any starting caliber WRs on that roster to pass up a potential #1 receiver like Bey. Heyward-Bey provides both size (6'1.5", 210) and speed (4.30) to a position of dire need for the Bears.

Re: 2009 ClanRam Mod Mock Draft - Selection Thread

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had their sights set on Josh Freeman QB. (selected by the Jets at #17) As they anticipated they would've had to trade up to get him. The Bucs are pretty thin at the QB position unless they can somehow make a deal for Jay Cutler.

Another glaring weakness for the Bucs is the middle of their defensive front. They play in a run heavy division and with the loss of Jovan Haye (signed with the Titans) and Chris Hovan (30 yrs. old) on the downside of his career they need to fill the gap.

With the 19th pick in the NFL draft the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select:

    Peria Jerry DT

The Bucs feel they've found that penetrating inside presence that is key to making the Tampa 2 defense work. A guy that can be a one or two gap DT who can be tough on run downs and be effective in rotation passing downs.

With the 20th pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions select:

    Michael Oher, OT, Ole Miss

If you're going to select a franchise QB with the first pick in the draft, the next thing you should do is draft a guy to protect his blind side. Oher has all the tools to be a top-notch LT in this league. He has slipped somewhat during the offseason, though not for any dramatic reasons. At pick 20, he could prove to be a great value.

With the 21st pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles select...

    EBEN BRITTON, OT, ARIZONA

The Eagles lost both of their starting tackles this offseason, and though they added Stacy Andrews, they'd like to find someone to replace William Thomas at left tackle. Temporarily they may be able to move someone else out there, but a long-term answer like Eben Britton would be preferable. An underclassman, Britton may need some time to grow into the position, but the Eagles figure that if they don't take him here, Minnesota may take him with their next pick. Philadelphia could look for an offensive skill position player, but they like addressing their lines in the first round, so Britton is the guy.

With the 22nd pick in the 2009 NFL draft, the Minnesota Vikings select...

    Alex Mack, C, California

The Vikes urgent needs this season are OT, DE....and someone who can replace Matt Birk. Minnesota's offensive line has had enough problems lately, and without a strong anchor in the middle, the Vikings will be going nowhere fast. Alex Mack IS that anchor.

The 23rd overall pick goes to the New England Patriots and they select...

Rey Maualuga - LB - USC

Once again top tier talent drops into the hands of the Patriots. Maualuga will join with Mayo in their 3-4 scheme giving them 2 Pro Bowl inside guys for a long time. Bruschi isn't getting any younger and might be more effective in a back up role. Either way the Pats will have a linebacking crew second to none in the NFL.

With the 24th pick in the 2009 NFL Draft the Atlanta Falcons select

    Larry English DE/OLB Northern Illinois

The Falcons lost two LB's in the offseason and Jamaal Anderson hasn't panned out after being the 8th pick in the draft a few years ago. The Falcons need a pass rusher and English fits at this position. Brandon Pettigrew was being considered here as another weapon for the Falcons but this defense needs help and English has the skills set that fits the pick.

With the 25th pick, the Dolphins select.......Virginia LB, Clint Sintim.

I admit it. I am truly torn in half over this pick. The Fins could use a big interior receiver to complement Ginn's vertical threat. I was real, real close to pulling the trigger on either Britt or Nicks with this pick. However, I also understand that I have to stand in the Tuna's shoes on this, and during his nearly 3 decades in draft war rooms he has spent exactly TWO first round picks on WRs. On the other hand, his legacy is littered with numerous OTs and LBs in the first. He doesn't need an OT, but he can always use another blitzing 3-4 OLB.

With Sintim, he fills a lot of wants. Sintim can challenge Roth from day one, and be the heir apparent to 32-year-old Joey Porter. Sintim is a great blitzer and plays strong against the blocks. Also, he walks into camp coming from a 3-4 D; a rarity. Factor in the personal factor of Parcells and Groh being buddies, and I think Sintim is the pick here.

With the 26th pick in the 2009 NFL draft the Baltiomore Ravens select:

    Percy Harvin (WR)

With the emergence of Joe Flacco (QB) and an aging wide receiver in Derrick Mason (35). The Ravens went with the playmaker they desperately needed.

With the 27th pick in the 2009 NFL draft, the Indianapolis Colts select:

Chris "Beanie" Wells, RB, Ohio State

The Colts need to add a new thoroughbred to their RB stable to compliment Joseph Addai, who has demonstrated that he is not up to the task of being the workhorse. Wells has the speed and moves to help the Colts go the distance.

With the 28th pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles select...

KNOWSHON MORENO - RB - GEORGIA

The Eagles took Eben Britton with their first of two 1st-round picks, knowing he likely wouldn't make it until this selection. Their gamble paid off, because they're still able to get a great running back like Moreno, who shares a number of qualities with current Eagles starter Brian Westbrook.

The GM of the New York Giants wishes to apologize for sleeping on the clock - literally.

With the 29th pick in the 2009 NFL draft, the New York Giants select...

    James Davis, RB, Clemson

With all of the media focused on the drama surrounding Plaxico Burress, convential wisdom is pointing towards the idea of drafting a playmaking WR in the first round. With Derrick Ward moving on to Tampa Bay, and Brandon Jacobs not yet showing the ability to play an entire season, running back is an area of the utmost concern on the offensive side of the ball. The coaching staff has faith in the ability of Eli Manning to complete passes to the "low profile" recievers on the roster, and this would indicate the need for a "checkdown" RB to be less important than someone who can hit the outside, turn the corner, and turn a short gain into a first down play. James Davis, while small, is tougher than his size would indicate, and he has the ability to run through the first tackle and pick up that tough yardage.
