With the 30th overall pick the Tennessee Titans select....

Vontae Davis - CB - Illinois

With defensive backs almost an after thought in this draft, this bodes well for the Titans. The Titans added Nate Washington this off season and are in my opinion projected to sign Torry Holt This makes the once needed receiver position obsolete. The Titans now turn their attention to the corner back position and find themselves sitting pretty by adding Davis. Harper will be 35 this season and the Titans will need to fill his position sooner than later. By getting Davis this gives Tennessee 2 possible shut down corners along with a bright future at the defensive back position.

With the 31st pick in the NFL Draft the Arizona Cardinals select

    Donald Brown RB Connecticut

With Edgerrin James probably not being resigned makes Donald Brown a good fit here. He has shifty moves and great balance but what makes him viable in Round 1 to the Cardinals is that he has great hands and an excellent pass catcher. Needs to work on picking up the blitz more but that can be taught.

With the 32nd pick, the Pittsburgh Steelers select.......Wake Forest CB, Alphonso Smith.

The loss of Bryant McFadden has created a need for an early round Corner. Taylor is fine on one side, but Townsend can only go so long in his mid-30's. And with no true heir apparent, this pick needs to be made. Smith is a solid man coverage guy with great ball skills. His abilities in man coverage will allow walk-up-safety Polumalu to blitz more.

With the 1st pick in the second round of the 2009 NFL Draft (33rd overall) the Detroit Lions select:

    Ron Brace DT

With an aging Grady Jackson (36) the Lions needed to get younger in the middle of their D-Line. Brace is a great run stopper but does need some work on his pass rushing capabilities.

With the 2nd pick (#34 overall) in the 2009 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots select:

    William Beatty, OT, Connecticut

The Patriots showed some vulnerability in pass protection last year, and need to be sure they can protect Tom Brady now that Matt Cassel isn't there to back him up. Beatty is a good prospect who can take over in a year or two for Matt Light, who will be 31 when this season starts.

With the third pick (#35 overall) in the 2009 NFL Draft, the St. Louis Rams select...

    CLAY MATTHEWS, LB, USC

Obviously this pick would be different if Matthews tested positive for steroids at the NFL combine, but Yahoo Sports is reporting that the doctor who administers the NFL policy on performance-enhancing drugs told Matthews on Friday that he did not test positive for banned substances. Until a positive test is confirmed, I'm not going to factor it in to my decision-making.

Matthews comes from an amazing football bloodline. His father played 19 seasons as an NFL linebacker with four Pro Bowl appearances. His uncle has a place in the NFL Hall of Fame. Despite this incredible family history, Matthews was a walk-on at USC and had to earn everything he got. He finally broke into the starting line-up as a senior and showed great ability and potential. His off-season workouts have been through the roof; many hailed him as the most impressive of the USC linebackers coming out of USC's recent pro day.

Matthews gives the Rams defense something that I believe new head coach Steve Spagnuolo and defensive coordinator Ken Flajole are craving - versatility. There are few things that Clay Matthews has not shown the ability to do. He's shown the kind of agility and athleticism you want to see in coverage from a three-down linebacker. He's demonstrated that he can be effective rushing the passer from the edge or blitzing up the middle. A reliable tackler, Matthews is also a strong, tough player who uses his hands well to take on and disengage from blockers. He spent time excelling on special teams, and barring a confirmed positive steroid test, is an incredibly high character player with great work ethic and intensity.

The Rams could certainly benefit from adding Matthews to their linebacking corps. He is not yet a finished product, but could be molded under Spagnuolo or Flajole to become a starting middle or strong-side linebacker. On passing downs, he could be used either in coverage or as a pass rusher, blitzing through the middle of the line or from the edge. He's still growing and developing as a player, but is considered by many to be a first round pick and is one of the best values on the board here. Though the Rams will also be intrigued by the receivers available as well as lineman Evander Hood, Matthews ends up being the pick here.

With the 4th pick in round 2 (#36 overall) in the 2009 NFL draft, the Cleveland Browns select...

    Kenny Britt, WR, Rutgers

Eric Mangini won't be able to do much with the Browns this season without major upgrades in several key areas. Unfortunately for the Browns, one of those areas will likely be WR. Braylon Edwards' contract runs out in 2010, and there is no wideout on the roster who can fill his shoes. Not counting a possible trade in the mix, WR is one position that needs a kick in the pants. With only five picks, using this one on Britt is risky due to his character issues and work ethic. However, 87 receptions for 1371 yards and 7 TD's, as well as his mis-match creating size, are enough for Cleveland to overlook those pesky "character issues". After all, this is the Browns!

With the 5th pick of the second round the Seattle Seahawks select...

Hakeem Nicks -WR - North Carolina

Just what the doctor ordered. Nicks was a projected a possible first rounder and dropped in the laps of our friends to the west. The Seachickens are very thin at the receiver position and need to rebuild fast. I wouldn't be surprised to see yet another receiver added in the later rounds. Nicks at least will give Seattle some options at this position in hopes they find a starter in the near future. Nicks posses all the intangibles for a potential NFL'er.

With the 6th pick in the 2nd Round of the NFL Draft the Cincinnati Bengals select

Max Unger C University of Oregon

To get first round talent like Unger at this position is a stroke of luck for the Bengals. The Bengals have desperate need at C and Unger can play C or G. Great find for the Bengals.

With the 7th pick of the 2nd round, the Jacksonville Jaguars select..........Oklahoma St. TE, Brandon Pettigrew.

The Jags could use a lot of things. DT; OT; another WR. However, other than Zyggy Hood, there's not much value at those positions at this spot. Now, Hood is a very real possibility here, but the value that Pettigrew brings at this point is simply too great to overlook. Just picture Lewis and Pettigrew at each end and Maclin as a flanker. Sounds weird, but who would have thought the Jags could finish day 1 with Maclin and Pettigrew?

With the 8th pick (40th overall) in the 2nd round of the 2009 NFL draft the Oakland Raiders select:

    Brian Robiskie WR

The Raiders were going to use their 1st pick in the draft (#7 overall) on a WR unless one of the top OT's dropped to them. Well they picked Eugene Monroe OT with that pick. The Raiders current roster is lacking in the quality WR position. Other than Javon Walker, Ashley Lelie & Johnnie Lee Higgins who is used more in the special teams arena they needed to bolster the position and help Jamarcus Russell or maybe Jeff Garcia with an added weapon. Brian Robiskie is a classic possession type receiver.

With the 9th pick in the second round (41st overall), the Green Bay Packers select:

    Connor Barwin, OLB/DE, Cincinnati

Given the Packers planned switch to a 3-4 alignment, Barwin is a great selection. He has the ability to be an effective edge-rusher, the size to play the run, and the speed to drop into coverage. A value pick at this stage of the draft.

With the 10th pick in the second round (42nd pick overall), the Buffalo Bills select...

    Jared Cook, TE, South Carolina

Buffalo addressed their defense in round one by taking a pass rusher in Aaron Maybin, but now they need to turn around and address their offense. The Bills' passing offense ranked 22nd in the league in yards per game, so they could benefit from more weapons for quarterback Trent Edwards. Last year's starting tight end (Robert Royal) has moved on to another team. and the remaining tight ends on Buffalo's roster have a combined 28 career catches and two touchdowns. Cook is an outstanding athlete whom the Bills can move around and use in a variety of ways.

With the 11th pick in the 2nd round of the 2009 NFL draft (43rd overall), the San Francisco ****** select...

    Marcus Freeman, OLB, Ohio State

Mike Singletary will likely get his wish for a true 3-4 defense this year. The LB corps seems to be the weak point of the defense in this scheme. While not a true pass-rushing LB like Orapko, he should bring an instant upgrade to special teams as well as at the linebacker position, since he seems capable of playing anywhere on the field.

With the 12th pick of the second round (44th overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins select...

    DARIUS BUTLER, CB, CONNECTICUT

The Dolphins are ecstatic to see Butler drop to them here, knowing he has a realistic chance of being a first round pick. He will last no further, as Miami races to the podium to add him to a secondary that lost their best corner in free agency. Butler should compete immediately for a starting job with Jason Allen and Eric Green, and has the tools to come out of such a battle victorious.
