Re: 2009 Mock Draft, 2 rounds
Welcome to the board Pape.
Unlike quite alot of the fold, I don't see the terrible need at WR. A run oriented and play action offense.........I see the need for a big DT more bracing <pun intended>. I just can't see Spag and the FO passing on Brace if he's there.
Re: 2009 Mock Draft, 2 rounds
Thanks richbert. I think that the WR selection was a knee-jerk reaction (on my part) to losing Holt.
I am actually 50/50 on the first pick. If Detroit doesnt go off track and take Curry, I think Spags might have a real hard time passing up Curry in the #2 spot and forgo a tackle until round 2.
Re: 2009 Mock Draft, 2 rounds
SORRY i see plenty of flaws:
- Jags wont take an MLB when they need an OT and WRs
- Broncos won't take an UT like Jerry they would wait till round 2 and trade up for Brace
-Oher wont go in front of Monroe
-Monroe wont go to #20
-Why would the Jets take an MLB when they signed Bart Scott?
-Duke Robinson is not a 1st rounder
-Why would the 9ers take Sanchez when they are intrested in Andre Smith
-the Texans wont take Beanie, they just took Slaton last year
-Beckwith is a 3rd rounder not 1st
-Why would the Giants take Harvin over Britt? They did not decide on Plax yet.
-William Moore is a 2nd rounder
-Rams wont go Offense twice in a row
-Maybin is a 1st rounder not 2nd
-who is Conner Barwin and how is he an early 2nd rounder?
-Eben Britton and Beatty wont last till the 2nd
-Eric Wood and Luigs are late 2nds and early 3rds
-Sean Smith is an early 2nd rounder
-Robert Ayers in an early 2nd or late 1st
-Alex mack will go in front of Max Unger
-Nicks wont make it to the Jags in the 2nd
-Why would Raiders take Ron Brace when they got Tommie Harris?
-Panthers wont get Moala they got a NT
- Where is Jarron Gilbert?
-Patriots will get a LE to replace Seymour before NT.
WOW thats alot

The former tight end that moved to defensive end for the Bearcats. He's probably going to be a rush linebacker in the NFL, but he is projected to be a 2nd round pick.
Re: 2009 Mock Draft, 2 rounds
Dont be sorry and thanks for the input Barrow. This is the 2nd mock one i've done (ever), so the comments are appreciated. Afterall, its a learning process for me.
- granted, the rams most likely go offense in their first two picks. as Isaid earlier, i think there is a real chance they get Curry with the #2, then an OT.
- Oher vs Monroe - Its opinion. I like Oher better, so he goes first in the mock.
- Jets take Laurinitis because they have a limited linbacking corp. What else do they have besides scott and pace? Nobody.
- Robinson isnt a 1st rounder? news to me... he's one of the bstter linemen out there imo.
- the jags, after letting mike peterson go need linebackers. thats the reasoning for the pick.
- beckwith - cant really argue with what you are saying.
- slaton was good, well could be great, I see the need at rb for houston, so i made the pick.
-Plax could (should) be going to jail. Harvin over because of speed, although britt does have a better height/speed ration than Harvin. Guess its just my anti-giant bias making that pick.
- this is connor barwin:
Connor Barwin | Cincinnati Scouting Report - 2009 NFL Draft Prospect
why is he an early 2nd? i dunno. He looked like a good fit in new england.
as for the rest, its really irrelevant if someone is a late or early 2nd rounder. I made picks based on what I perceived team needs to be and make picks accordingly. I do appreciate your input.
Re: 2009 Mock Draft, 2 rounds
Personal opinion; Philly doesn't take Brandon Pettigrew. They have more dire needs, and I think that they have to focus on the running situation, and pick up a Star quality back because, let's face it, if Westbrook goes down, their offense shuts down. This said, I feel that they might also consider looking into the WR situation depending on who is on the board still.
I actually see Pettigrew (amazing offensive talent in the receiving game as well as blocking, he excells in all parts of being a TE) slipping out of the first round, just based on the fact that TE's don't relatively make as much, and usually aren't something people stare at as a "glaring" need. Usually people look into the TE slot as a "we could definitely use a quality guy in that slot, but we've got chunks missing in our lines and secondary" or such. I potentially see him going to....the Rams in round 2 with the 35th.
This is the only "offensive" pick I can see the Rams making if we were to make 2 offensive picks in a row. It would basically solidify the new offensive line, and at the same time, boost all three parts of the offense at once. Run block, pass protection, passing game. Pettigrew could definitely step in and balance out our lack of talent (developed talent) in the receiving game. We all look at the situation now and go, "We need a new WR, or we need to get a Free Agent, or blah blah." What if we get an amazing Tight End in there as a pimary target. This physically does work. And as Spags is a physical guy, it makes sense.
We are going to see a focus on the running game. Essentially relating us to a power offense. Well, based on that, your passing is going to become a short distance passing game, and a big, physical, quick, and powerful TE could take over the field.
For reference, teams that use a TE as a primary target are as follows;
Dallas Cowboys - Jason Witten
Kansas City Chiefs - Tony Gonzalez
San Diego Chargers - Antonio Gates
Indianapolis Colts - Dallas Clark
Washington Redskins - Chris Cooley
Houston Texans - Owen Daniels
And you cannot deny that other TE's such as Heath Miller, Bo Scaife, Zach Miller, John Carlson, Jeremy Shockey, and Greg Olson open up so much more for the receiving by commanding the middle of the field, as well as being able to power through for extra yards that smaller guys aren't capable of doing so with.
And last comment on this topic, we are terrible at scoring. Tight Ends are ridiculously important in the red zone (scoring zone) when it comes to having options besides "Let's run it up the middle". And for a TE with the size and vertical jumping ability that Pettigrew has shown at the combine, I think he would be a perfect fit to buffer all parts of our offense.
The best part of a good defense is a good offense. The best part of a good offense is a good defense. (This may be contradictory, but it is true, both sides of the ball feed off each other. If you are scoring, your opponent MUST score. This situation can cause mistakes and forced plays which usually result in turnovers. If your opponent cannot score, than you are getting the offense back the ball, and hopefully in good field position) So, if we can help our run block, pass protection, and get a large receiver that has all the skills and quick route speed *check pettigrew's 20 yard shuttle* I say we should jump on it if he falls to it.
Hmmmz...remember when everyone was spazzin bout Crabtree? Pettigrew basically could give us what Crabtree would have. Oh, wait, he blocks on the line and catches? Isn't that more useful? Oh, and wait... He didn't lie about his height? Oh, wait, Crabtree isn't an elite speed Receiver, I wonder which of the two of these guys would win in a race......... the world may never know.

If there's one available that's worth the #35 pick. I don't think there will be. I think there's a real chance the Rams could go Offense with their first 2 picks. WR is probably just as great a need as MLB and NT, so I totally get where you're coming from on that one.

It IS opinion, but the consensus opinion of scouts, experts and amateurs alike is that Monroe is the better player.

Vernon Gholston? I think the Jets have more pressing needs. If Jeremy Maclin's there, they take him.

Again, consensus is that he's not a first rounder and certainly not a first rounder at Right Tackle like you've projected.

There are better players available there. Look for them to go with Maclin or Oher and come back with a LB in the second or third, where there could be substantially better value.

With you on this one, though I think Maclin, Cushing and Davis probably are better choices.

Britt could be another coming of Burress, without the legal drama. He'd be exactly what I'd be looking at if I were a Giants fan.

I think when you're mocking, especially for other teams, It's important to have one foot in both bathtubs. One foot knowing what teams need, and the other with a grasp on adequate value-- and I do think there's a distinction between 'early' and 'late' second round pick for a reason. Generally, picks from about 20-35(you can make it 40 in this draft) or so are considered the same 'tyoe' of player, meaning they all grade out fairly evenly. Point is, if you're letting one foot dictate, and the other's stopped still, you're going to end up going round in circles.
Re: 2009 Mock Draft, 2 rounds
Bar-bq, great response, thanks.
nice, concise and well reasoned and non-condesending. appreciate it much ;)
I follow the game rather closely, but as a rule have always stayed away form the college game and the draft, figuring there was way too much information to collect and coalesce. But over the past few years, with the growing prominence of the draft, I figured I might figure out how to put a mock together. Last year I made a single first round draft. This year, I want to get thru four rounds. So the critism/advice that you guys provide helps me expand my thinking when it comes to analyzing potential picks.
The mock is by no means static. I intend to revamp/redo/edit this ever growing monster, especially when teams make more deals, add/release more players (like the raiders signing khalif barnes today) and we get more feed back from college pro days. I would also like to add some trades to the mix. Teams like Philly, Detroit and New England all have multiple first day picks, so them moving some of them is a big possibility.
Look forward to your input after Mock 2.0 is done.
edit:
as to the Jets, vernon Gholston is exactly why I think the Jets might might be in the market for another linebacker. The guy is a bust.

Me too.
It's too early to judge on Gholston. A lot of pundits said the same thing about Mario Williams after his first season.
Re: 2009 Mock Draft, 2 rounds
Vernon was getting shoved into a new defensive scheme that he didn't play in at tOSU. Giving him the behefit of the doubt for that, and his incredible physical abilities, I believe that you would be better to wait until his second -> third seasons to decide whether you believe him to be a bust.

Gholston, #10 pick (i think) overall last year - 13 tackles in 15 games. He sat out a game as a healthy scratch. Williams started slow in his first year but still managed 47 tackles and 4.5 sacks. Big difference between the two. Gholston just disappeared on the field. Maybe I am a bit too early to declare him a bust, but if he is isn't one, he is damn close.
Re: 2009 Mock Draft, 2 rounds
I wouldn't mind if rams gave a 3rd round pick for Golston. The rams could use another DE. Jets are using him as a standup LB. Long and Golston at the DE positions sounds good to me.
This might be L. Little's last year.
