2014 Draft Poll #3: Would the Cowboys draft Johnny Manziel if he's there @ 16?

Would the Dallas Cowboys draft Johnny Manziel if he was there at No. 16?

    Dallas Morning News

Jerry Jones might not be willing to trade up into the top 10 to draft Johnny Manziel next month, but if the Heisman Trophy winning quarterback somehow falls to the Dallas Cowboys at No. 16, donít rule out Manziel being their pick.

How much longer can Tony Romo be the Cowboysí starting quarterback? Itís an important question largely because his long term successor isnít on the current roster.

The perfect fit for Jones is Manziel.

Jones said during a February radio interview on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM] that the Cowboys will never see Manziel because heíll be long gone by 16. Mock drafts certainly arenít an exact science, but it should be noted that itís very rare to find one that has Manziel falling out of the top 10.

    But what if heís there?

As youíve probably heard, Jones cares greatly about TV ratings. Manziel will easily outperform any other draft pick in that department. Adding to the intrigue, Jones has met with the former Texas A&M standout on multiple occasions over the last few months.

One of the toughest questions Jones would be faced with if Manziel was available is, will his style of play translate to the NFL?

ďManziel is in a class by himself in terms of rating,Ē ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper said during a Wednesday conference call. ďYou donít rate him against the other quarterbacks. Heís a pass/fail quarterback. Heís not really graded. You really want him or you donít. He doesnít fit any system. You have to create a system for him.

ďI think Manziel brings energy, he brings leadership, brings a competitiveness. Heíll bring that it factor. He has it. Heís got that magic that everybody talks about.Ē

And Jones would love to have that magic as much as any owner.

Now, Jonesí ownership/general manager style has changed a little recently. He traded back in the first round last year and selected a center. He didnít overpay for Jason Hatcher, Jared Allen or Julius Peppers. He let DeMarcus Ware and Miles Austin walk.

While Romo, 34, was just given a six-year, $108 million contract extension last year, he is coming off two back surgeries in less than two years. You canít honestly believe that doesnít concern Jones. Do you think he hasnít pictured Manziel scrambling around the pocket and finding Dez Bryant for highlight touchdowns?

ESPNís Ed Werder even reported Wednesday that Jones was ďravingĒ about Manziel this weekend in front of Romo.

Thereís no arguing that the Cowboys have much bigger needs than quarterback. Obviously the defense was historically terrible last season. The defensive line alone needs multiple upgrades.

But weíre talking about Jerry Jones, the man that loves publicity as much as anyone in professional sports. Yes, he wants the Cowboys to win, but he also wants to bring Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, LeBron James, Eminem, Jay Z, Drake, Jon Bon Jovi, Hulk Hogan, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones along for the ride.

Jones let Randy Moss come and go during the 1998 draft and regretted it for a long, long time. Donít bet against him taking Manziel if heís still on the board when the Cowboys are on the clock.

It sounds as if Manziel could go Top 10, if you believe most of the projections, but strange things have happened. If the league doesn't view much separation between the top 3-4 passers and the second tier, early teams may pass, causing some quarterbacks to fall.

If Johnny Manziel is available for the Cowboys, would they take him?

Tony Romo just signed a six-year extension last March, so the earliest the Cowboys could cut him and actually save money against the cap would be 2017. But he has some back issues that are concerning, and the Cowboys could do with Manziel what the Green Bay Packers did with Aaron Rodgers - draft him in the first round to groom behind your vet and let him sit for three years. Rodgers only attempted 59 passes in his first three years in the league, so it would be a similar time frame for Manziel.

Yes, having Manziel behind Romo would create a circus, but when has Jerry Jones ever shied away from attention? With all that said, the Cowboys have the talent to compete now, and have bigger needs to address than the quarterback position. Could they really pass on adding an immediate contributor in order to take a guy who might not see the field in three years?

    What do YOU think?

Jerry Jones? He'd take him in a heartbeat!

As far as Jerry Jones is concerned he is all about style over substance. Couple that with his ego and having a Texas boy lead his team especially as charismatic as Manziel can be and there would be no question. Other holes be damned.

Romo cap hit in 2015 is an unrealistic 27,773,000! And his dead money is 19,908,000, so I would say anything is possible with Jones at the controls. Not sure how they get away from Romo and or how they can afford to keep him.

Cowboys ARE a circus... Cowboys, err rather, Jones would certainly consider it and I put his Manziel trigger finger at 75% likelihood.

Wait, so at age 33 and with back problems, the Cowboys still gave him that ridiculous contract?! I knew it was a big contract, but that's just crazy.

I would be willing to bet that if Johnny Football drops to oh say.... wait for it! Number 13 I could see Jonesy going all in to move up and get his boy making a nice block buster trade to the Rams! Oh Yeah baby! Bring us your draft picks for the next few years! LOL

Plus to be honest Johnny would probably be stoked to play in Dallas and learn from such a gun slinger as Tony Romo is. Tony might actually be a good mentor to Johnny and introduce him to some cute honey's too! That would be such a show to watch I would be really looking forward to the Cow Pokes games on TV! LOL
