With the 15th pick in the 2014 NFL draft
2014 Mod Mock Draft *THE SELECTION THREAD*-roby.jpg

The Pittsburgh Steelers select Bradley Roby, CB - Ohio State

They may not be Manning and Brady
, but Pittsburgh has Flacco and Dalton, (and now Manziel), in their division, and are decidedly weak at corner. Bradley may give their so-so D-line another second to get to opposing QBs.

The pick here could have been Ebron, but Pittsburgh has more faith in Big Ben making his receivers look good than vice versa, and CB position drops aff markedly after Roby.

With the 16th pick the Dallas Cowboys select...

    Anthony Barr, DE/OLB, UCLA

The Cowboys lost Demarcus Ware this offseason along with other significant pieces of their front 7. To have a prospect like Barr fall to them at this point is a no-brainier in my opinion.

With the 17th pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, the Baltimore Ravens select...

    Taylor Lewan, OT, Michigan

Ravens incumbent Kelichi Osmele really fared better at guard in 2013, and Lewan's slide gives them the luxury of kicking him inside and plugging a top-ten talent in on the right. I'm surprised Lewan fell this far, but he's a great fit in Baltimore as a protector for Joe Flacco. The Ravens could also look at a wide receiver ... but which WR they want to go after might be the point of contention here. As it stands, Lewan is the BPA who fills a giant hole. Slam dunk.

With the 18th pick in the 2014 Mod Mock Draft, the New York Jets select:

    Brandin Cooks, WR, Oregon State

It came down to CB or WR for the Jets, and while Kyle Fuller was a tempting option, I went with Cooks as the selection. The Jets already acquired a possession/Red Zone receiver in Eric Decker. Cooks brings the big play potential from the slot, much in the way the Rams plan to use Tavon Austin (who the Jets reportedly were targeting last year).

With the 19th pick, the Miami Dolphins select...

    ZACK MARTIN
    OT, NOTRE DAME

The Dolphins need serious OL help. They finally replaced Jake Long at left tackle, but could still use upgrades at at least three other offensive line positions (both guard spots and right tackle). Martin has the versatility to start outside at tackle, but could also become a Pro Bowl caliber guard if moved inside. The Dolphins may have preferred Taylor Lewan to lock down their right tackle spot, but Martin will be a consolation prize they're very happy with.

With the 20th pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, the Arizona Cardinals select
    Calvin Pryor, Safety, Louisville

Had Zack Martin not just gone off the board, this might have been a tougher decision, but even so, Pryor is too good to pass up here, especially since Bell is a free agent, flirting with retirement, and Mathieu is rehabbing his knee, with no set timetable for his return. Plus, they need to keep pace with the rest of the NFC West defenses, especially after losing Dansby.

With the 21st pick, the Green Bay Packers select...

    Stephon Tuitt, DE/DT, Notre Dame

The Packers D-line is a little bare right now. They brought back Raji even though he hasn't played all that well. They will need stronger Line play to pull blockers off Matthews and Perry. Tuitt is a prototypical 5-technique who should mesh well with their current personnel. However, he does have a foot issue that will need to heal before camp.

With the 22nd pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles select...

    Jason Verrett, CB, TCU

Verrett is undersized, but he has everything else you look for at the cornerback position. He's fast, great in coverage, and a chippy player to boot. The Eagles have an awful back end, and Verrett figures to play outside, flanking Malcolm Jenkins and whoever else ends up back there. Of course, the other option is an X receiver, but there are so many of those in this draft that Philly can afford to take a Round 2 flyer (excuse the pun). I'm expecting good things of Verrett in the NFL - he could be Altruan Verner in a few years.

With the 23rd pick in the 2014 Mod Mock Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs select:

    Eric Ebron, TE, North Carolina

The Chiefs need to add more power to its receiving corps. I considered selecting a WR, but Ebron is regarded as the top TE in the draft by many, and Kansas City needs to improve its production at the position. With a 6'4, 250 lb. frame and a 4.60 in the forty, Ebron has the ability to create a mismatches in the middle of the field.

With the 24th overall pick, the Cincinnati Bengals select...

    KYLE FULLER
    CB, VIRGINIA TECH

Tell the Bengals before the draft that four corners will come off the board before their pick, and they'd likely be worried. But in this scenario, Kyle Fuller - arguably the draft's third best cornerback prospects in some circles - is still avalable here. So despite the run on the position, I think Cincinnati will heavily consider the Virginia Tech defender to help bolster a secondary that has both injury and age concerns.

With the 25th pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, the San Diego Chargers select:
Loius Nix, Defensive Tackle - Notre Dame

San Diego really wanted Kyle Fuller to help out a less than stellar secondary, but really need help everywhere defensively, and a clog the middle run-stopping nose tackle is a good start/centerpiece in improving the defense.

With the 26th pick, the Browns select....

    Marquise Lee, WR, USC

The Browns just invested in their latest franchise QB in Johnny Manziel. They now supply him with a weapon across from Gordon.

Another option would be Ryan Shazier, to bring youth to An aging LB cadre.

With the 27th pick, the New Orleans Saints select...

    Demarcus Lawrence, DE/OLB, Boise State

The Saints miss out on the huge run of corners a few picks earlier, and could be a prime candidate for a late first-round trade out. One area where value almost meets need with a number of players is at OLB/DE, where players like Demarcus Lawrence, Kony Ealy and Dee Ford are all available and project as possible fits. The Saints need to strengthen their pass rush given that they go against Cam Newton and Matt Ryan twice each a year, and Lawrence, to me, represents the best scheme fit of the three prospects I named.

With the 28th pick in the 2014 Mod Mock Draft, the Carolina Panthers select:

    Odell Beckham, Jr., WR, LSU

Replacing the Steve Smith is a high priority for the Panthers. Beckham, Jr., has a similar skill set in a somewhat larger package than Smith. Cam Newton will be very happy to have him in the lineup.

With the 29th pick, the New England Patriots select...

    TIMMY JERNIGAN
    DT, FLORIDA STATE

Don't be surprised if the Patriots ultimately trade out of this spot, stockpiling picks in a deep draft. However, in this projection, I see that Jernigan is one of the best players on the board and would give the Patriots some much needed youth behind 32 year old Vince Wilfork and 33 year old Tommy Kelly.
