Re: With the 52nd pick, St. Louis selects Brian Leonard, FB, Rutgers

Leonard is an amazing athlete. Strength, Speed, Athleticism, Catching ability. I see little downside to him, not to mention that he's a great character guy.

Calling this kid a FB is a mistake. He's instantly our #2 RB and a quality pick. Everyone always says "Draft the best player available". Well the Rams did just that and got a guy with a ton of heart and character.

If Leonard had come out a year earlier he would have been 1st round talent.

That's VERY debatable. I know he wasn't the BPA on my board at that point, and I doubt that was a rare opinion with Kalil and Crowder on the board.

It sounds like I'm very down on Leonard. I'm not, but I don't like who we passed on to get him.

On the coverage unit, I would hope so.

For what it's worth, Linehan suggests he's not going to be a fullback but rather the #2 guy behind Jackson...

For the Rams, Linehan envisions Leonard stepping in and filling a variety of roles, not least of which will see him take over as the clear cut No. 2 back behind Jackson.

“I really believe he will be our No. 2 back by early in the season at our tailback spot,” Linehan said. “There have been comparisons to Mike Alstott. I stay away from those types of comparisons, but I think he is very capable of being that type of a player. I also think Brian is going to be a very effective if not outstanding special teams player from the beginning.”

This pick is what I call my Ronny Turiaf Pick. A guy who can play, loves the game and has nothing but heart. I think it's a great pick. With Carriker our D line is good. I think a lot of you are forgetting the fact that we picked up Wroten last year in the third. and he was projected to be a first round pick. I think Linehan and Co. are doing a great job.

    Linehan on Leonard
    By Jeff Gordon
    04/28/2007 9:18 pm

Here is what Scott Linehan had to say about his second-round draft pick:

“I really believe that he will be our No. 2 back by early in the season at our tailback spot. I really believe he will be playing a number of plays in packages. We certainly have one of the top running backs in the league. Steven (Jackson) can pretty much do all the roles. He is our feature back, but he can be a very effective short-yardage player and filled in on third downs when we lost Tony Fisher. It was a pretty big workload for him and he accepted it, but there has to be a point where you have more versatility and have more players like that and Brian can fit very nicely in that role.

    On liking big backs:

“Personally, I like that dimension as far as a player being able to match up. There’s a time and place, don’t get me wrong, for using a smaller back for match-ups, as far as getting that person out on pass routes. But when it comes to pass blocking, it’s hard to add bulk and size to that particular player. He’s got to be able to do it. He has to have the toughness and mindset for it, but he’s also got to have the size for it.

“It’s also a big part of being durable and being able to handle the punishment of playing a 16-game season as a running back. Those guys wear down. Even Steven will tell you. By season’s end, he took a lot of hits and had a lot of touches. You hope that’s what (Leonard) is able to do for us.”

I wouldn't have touched Mike Bush with the 10 foot pole he's got in his leg.

Re: With the 52nd pick, St. Louis selects Brian Leonard, FB, Rutgers

As mentioned in the 2007 Draft Discussion thread, I'm really excited and looking forward to an improved running game this year for the Rams -- and that means Jax just might turn into a monster.

I love the idea of having Leonard in the backfield at times to compliment the packages that Coach Linehan referred to. To me, this former Rutgers RB seems mature for his age, ready to learn and to contribute even as a rookie. Add to that the size and FB rampower of Madison 'Hitman' Hedgecock and we might be moving the chains more often and with greater yardage this season. WATCH OUT!

    Welcome Leonard! :r

Re: With the 52nd pick, St. Louis selects Brian Leonard, FB, Rutgers

I'm coming round more and more, and I'm happy to welcome Brian Leonard to the team. Consider this- the Rams were one pick off landing a DE that was graded by many as a first round prospect in round three in Charles Johnson. If the Panthers had passed, and the Rams selected Johnson, there would be nobody complaining, or feeling dissapointed about this pick.

As is stands, unles we get Texas' Robinson (trade up?- J. Butler, D. Byrd?) In the next round, this is a debatable pick.

But we were so nearly right on the Money.

Robinson in round four makes this draft work.

Re: With the 52nd pick, St. Louis selects Brian Leonard, FB, Rutgers

You have to look at Leonard as an unusual prospect that brings more than running ability. While there likely were runners who are his equal taken later, I'm not sure you'll find a better receiver out of the backfield in this draft, and he obviously has some experience and willingness to block having played FB as a Senior. These traits make him an excellent compliment for Jackson.

That's not to say that I don't see Nick's point. A pass rusher is a big need that has not been filled yet, and there were some players on the board who would have been worth a look.

Still, this one's too close a call for me to be upset about it. Hopefully, we'll get that pass rusher on Day 2.

Just to clarify, I'm not upset about the direction we went, but it's not what I would have preferred. I like Leonard as a prospect and I think he and Jackson will make for a very good 1-2 punch. I just don't like seeing us pass on what I think is better value at positions that are arguably equally concerning.

Re: With the 52nd pick, St. Louis selects Brian Leonard, FB, Rutgers

    BRIAN LEONARD
    Position: Fullback/halfback
    Height, weight: 6-1, 226
    College: Rutgers

    COLLEGE RECAP
Leonard shifted between positions with ease through his career, starting 45 of
47 games and being named to Pro Football Weekly's All-America team at both
positions. He also holds the school record with 207 career receptions.

    PLUSES
Above-average strength and leg drive to create and maintain a rush lane as a
lead blocker. Has enough speed to separate from defenders after the catch and
enough power to overrun smaller defenders. Holds the ball secure to his chest
when running inside and in the outside hand when turning the corner.

    MINUSES
Despite his strength as a runner, he fails to generate much pop on contact with
his hands. He tends to get too high in his stance, leaving his feet exposed for
    shoestring tackles.

    PROJECTED ROLE
Coach Scott Linehan hopes that Leonard will be the Rams' No. 2 back. He could
be effective on third down and can fill in at fullback.
