McKenzie starts to whack “out of whack” contracts
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on February 10, 2012, 9:47 AM EST
The most telling words new Raiders G.M. Reggie McKenzie has spoken since taking over his new job came at the introduction of new coach Dennis Allen.
“From where we are, we’ve got some contracts that are kind of out of whack,” McKenzie said via CSNBayArea.com. “But in my discussions and viewing the cap situation, we should be fine.”
Out of whack contracts were a tradition in the late Al Davis years. With the release of Stanford Routt on Thursday, McKenzie began to whack them down to size.
Davis had players that became known as “scholarship” guys. These were Raiders that Davis drafted, developed, and paid too much. Routt wasn’t a terrible player — although he was pretty bad in 2011 — but he was a perfect example of this phenomenon.
McKenzie cut Routt this early because his contract forced an early decision. Other overpaid players figure to be released closer to the start of free agency.
Other candidates to be released: Aaron Curry ($5.76 million), John Henderson ($4 million), Michael Huff ($8 million), and Tommy Kelly ($6 million). Even players like Kamerion Wimbley could be up for debate.
We’ve seen mixed reaction from Raiders fans on the Routt decision, but it’s a great move. It’s a sign that fiscal sanity has returned to the organization.
The process of correcting old mistakes may be painful in the short term, but the Raiders now have a leader able to think about the best interests of the organization long-term.

Re: Aaron Curry Available?
You never know CR fan, he the type of player who flashes ability at times, but is a total liability in pass coverage. I think he is the type of player that will flourish with good coaching. So well see.?
Does anyone remember the cartoon The hair bear bunch- Reggie McKenzie-

Re: Aaron Curry Available?
Aaron Curry is not worth the #2 overall pick in the draft!

Re: Aaron Curry Available?
I wouldn't mind going after him. He's not bad, but he's not great. But Im pretty sure that SJAX and Aaron Curry dont like each other, and I know who is the king pin in this organization.

Re: Aaron Curry Available?
I'd kick his tires at least. He was supposed to be the next sure thing. Now he's possibly on his 3rd team in less than a year, though from what heard, he at least did very well to start with the Raiders. But then again, that regime is gone.
The one thing I do know is that Williams loves to blitz, and, well, that is Curry's specialty. I can only hope that they have some kind of food based Curry graphic they put up every time he has a sack.I believe!

Must. Not. Comment. On. Former. Man. Crush.
Thought. I. Had. Moved. On.
....It would be a lie to say that I don't want him on the Rams... doh, restitance vs Curry's charm is futile!

Re: Aaron Curry Available?
For the briefest of moments, I thought that picture of Reggie McKenzie in the original post was Curry and was shocked at how he'd let himself go.

Re: Aaron Curry Available?
We need some talent at the LB position. For the right price I think he is worth taking a look at.

Re: Aaron Curry Available?
If you were to Google "HUbison doesn't know his butt from a hole in the ground", you would get 3.6 billion hits. At the top of the results page you'd see a picture of Aaron Curry.
I whiffed on this guy in a huge way. I really thought he was going to be the next Lawrence Taylor. But he hasn't even been Tim "Tool Man" Taylor. Maybe our Seahawk friends can help us out here, but as I understand it his problem is the large void between his ears. Maybe Fisher & Williams are more fluent in Moron than Pete Carroll was. Maybe they can get something out of him."Before the gates of excellence the high gods have placed sweat; long is the road thereto and rough and steep at first; but when the heights are reached, then there is ease, though grievously hard in the winning." --- Hesiod

I'd kick the tires. If he is cheap, let him try. If there is a bidding war, let someone else have him.

Re: Aaron Curry Available?
It's ok, Hub. It you look back at that 2009 First Round, there's a whole lot of chaff and not a whole lot of wheat.
The good: Stafford(1), Raji(9), Orakpo(13), Jenkins(14), Cushing(15, 'cept for that "being pregnant" thing), Freeman(17, kinda), Maclin(19), Harvin(22, mostly good) Matthews(26), Nicks(29), Britt(30).
The real bad: Curry(4), Smith(6), Howard-Bey(7), Monroe(8), Crabtree(10), Maybin(11), Moreno(12), English(16), Ayers(18).I believe!
