The after senior bowl mock draft
I look at the draft as filling our needs for the future and building a good team. Let's face it, we have so many needs to fill that it will take 2 drafts to fill it. Good teams are built through the draft; dynasties are built through the draft.
Free agency are for filling immediate needs for a year or two. If a person was good then his team would not let him go in the first place. They would franchise them or pay them good money. For every one Will Witherspoon, there is 10 Drew Bennett in FA.
This draft is not so good in S position. I would like to grab a safety with our 1st round next year. That would be an a sick class of safeties next year if a lot of junior safeties come out; even without it would be very good. It is good in OT position. The WR - I see alot of 2 or 3 receiver but hardly any 1 receivers.
So now my mock:
Rd 1 - Chris Long / Sedrick Ellis / Glenn Dorsey / Vernon Gholston
Long - fills our need and I hope the 'Phins won't take him. He is good.
Ellis - Great Senior Bowl and would be great for us at UT.
Dorsey - Same as Ellis, still worry about the knees. Have not heard one way or another about it.
Gholston - Enigman. Could be a great stud. Will have to see combine on him. 3 -4 OLB or 4-3 DE.
Rd 2 - Chris Williams / Carl Nicks / Gosder Cherilus
Williams - Great kick slide. Will be a good LT in NFL; not so much a RT. Needs a mean streak. Shorter arms than usual for a OT.
Nicks - Raw but seems to have the ability and will learn under Pace. More suited for the RT but can probably play LT.
Cherilus - Massive T. Can not handle speed rush but will run block with the best of them.
Rd 3 - Lavelle Hawkins / Earl Bennett / Shawn Crable
Hawk - What can I say; great senior bowl. May not be here. Could be a good #2 or a great #3 WR.
Bennett - Could be a steal if he is here. Definite #2 WR. With Holt prognosis, we will need a WR in the 3rd round.
Crable - Good LB. He is what the Rams need.
Rd 4 - John Greco G/OT Toledo / Mike McGlynn every pos Pitt / Thomas DeCoud S Cal
Greco - Great Shrine bowl. Seems to be a natural RT. Plus he can play G. Could really surprise.
McGlynn - Plays just about every position on the line. RT/Guards/C/LS. The Rams need a player whose versatile to fill in when needed. He is a lot better than Adam Goldberg.
DeCoud - Good hitter. Decent safety.
Rd 5 - Brian Johnston DE Gardner-Webb / Josh Barrett S AZ State / Mike Cox FB GaTech / Spencer Larson LB Zona
Johnston - Had a pretty decent Shrine. One of best small school sleeper. I just see something in him.
Barrett - He has been sliding. He is a good safety. The problem is he is injury prone. If it is not one injury it is another.
Cox - Probably the best blocking FB in the draft.
Larson - Diamond in the rough.
Rd 6a - Fernando Velasco C Georgia / Jason Rivers WR Hawaii
Velasco - Raw but has potential.
River - More on potential than anything else.
Rd 6b - Art Camody K 'Ville
Camody - We need a kicker. Wilkins is going downhill and maybe retire. Need a replacement.
Rd 7a - Owen Schmitt FB WVU / Kevin O'Connell QB SDSU
Schmitt - Terrible Senior Bowl practice. He is stiff but if he is used right, he can be a star. I think his talent lies as special team guy and used as a blocking FB.
O'Connell - Raw very raw. He got height, and decent arm. He could be something after sitting and watching and learning for a few seasons.
Rd 7b - Jack Ikegwuonu CB Wisconsin
Ike - Kind of sad; declare as a junior and tore up his ACL in training. I say grab him and stash him away on IR for a year. He might challenge for the #2 CB spot in '09
I would like to trade the 2 6th rounder for a 5th. I think some of these position are deep that you can get a contributor for this team.Last edited by onslaught11; -01-28-2008 at 12:43 PM. Reason: Added O'Connell
