Agree or disagree with this regarding free safety

Assuming no free agent acquisition for FS for the Rams.

It appears the drop off is substantial after Pryor and Ha-Ha are gone and both of them look to go somewhere between 12 and 19.

Do we go ahead and grab one of them with the #13 or do we wait until maybe even the 3rd round to get a FS ?

Since you have to have a STARTER, not just some gut who you hope will compete (LIKE THEY HAVE HAD FOR 15 YEARS)

FS is all about range, and Clinton Dix has that a bit more than Pryor, the hitter.

The Rams have a hitter in McDonald, need the cover safety, like Seattle has in Earl Thomas.

The reason I want a top free agent to be signed is to free up #13, even though I have Clinton DIx and Pryor in the 17-22 range.

Then at 13 you can take Evans, Benjamin, Beckham at WR, or Gilbert, Dennard at CB, or even a DT like Donald.

If you don't get a free agent, you must go safety at 13, or hopefully trade downa few spots and go there.

I think there are viable options in each of the first three rounds.

Round 1: Hasean Clinton-Dix, Calvin Pryor
    Round 2: Ed Reynolds
Round 3: Terrence Brooks, Dion Bailey

Additionally, I could see the Rams taking another SS-type, as Fisher seems to make little distinction between the two safety spots. That would open the door to guys like:

Round 2: Deone Bucannon, Jimmy Ward
Round 3: Craig Loston, Ahmad Dixon

As far as the next tier at FS, you have Ward, who lots of people like a lot, Joyner, who is small and fast, Buchanon, who is big and fast, and Bailey, who is a taleted playmaker with attitude. All will go in round two, even before the Rams pick at 44.

If some others sneak into 2nd round, like Reynolds, Loston, it really leaves it pretty bare from rd 3 on.

Of course there are alwasy safeties to bring in with little invested, and then hope you hit.

But can the Rams afford to do that?

Do you want McLeod at FS?

To more specifically respond to the question, I think the Rams should take a safety in the first two rounds.

The players that are likely to be there in Round 3 are viable, but the risk is greater given the high level of need.

I think in the draft, round 2 is really our last chance to grab someone I'd feel good about. I think the lack of depth at the position combined with several teams in the market for one, will lead to a couple of reaches and surprises. If we wait until round 3 I think we'll find there isn't much left to choose from.

I think Deone Bucannon would be a heck of a safety for the Rams.

I'm with you on that one. I think he could be a real defensive playmaker. I doubt he lasts past Round 2, though, so the Rams would have to pull the trigger at #44.

Was he at the Combine? I was looking to see what he could do, but missed him, assuming he was there. Could be an interesting combo with his former secondary mate, TJ McDonald.

Just checked he was there, but was so-so on the 40 yard dash. Deone Buchanon seemed to have posted some impressive #'s. Could be a round 2 pick. Hopefully we'll have at least 2 picks in the round.

    Go Rams!

trust me, i've said before his numbers won't impress

but he just shows up and makes plays

he's a leader in the locker room

he's just a football player, does his job right

a lot of combine "losers" don't have impressive abilities necessary, until they step onto the football field and just tear it up

same thing with morgan breslin, he might not have had the best numbers to show at the combine, being snubbed doesn't help either, but he just makes plays and gets to the quarterback

that said, i will say that bailey played safety in high school, though he was moved to linebacker and though he excelled, he was only a safety this past season, so i'd say he's a bit rusty

most see him as a nickel safety/linebacker to utilize his ball skills, though i think he could be better than that

I don't think the Rams have to go safety in Round One. I don't think it's wise to force anything, especially if there is better value on the board at another need position (OL, WR, CB, for instance). It's all going to depend on how the board falls. Jimmie Ward, Ed Reynolds, Deone Bucannon, and Dion Bailey are all worthy Day Two options if the Rams opt to do something different in the first round.

It'd be great to have Bucannon, Safety at #44 . Currently ranked 82 overall by CBS Sports.com / NFL (projected a 2-3 rounder)...

If we can get Gilbert or Dennard at 13 that would be work for me. Just not high enough on Pryor or Ha Ha to go 13 with them. Rather have the above mentioned two or if Evans fell and we got him there. I would even Consider Donald. I was high orignally on the safties but as time goes by, just souring enough to say go Bucannon at 44.

Side Note: If we passed and Tampa were to get him he could be the Bucs Canon, pretty cool nickname :-)

I like Dion Bailey, probably one of the most versatile players in this draft
