Av's 7-Round Rams Mock Draft (Final Version)

Absent a new CBA and flurry of pre-draft FA activity, these are my final picks for the Rams:

Round 1: Aldon Smith, DE, Missouri
(Previous pick: Cameron Jordan, DE, California)
I expect my prior picks, Julio Jones and Cameron Jordan, to be gone before the Rams make their pick. I think it probably comes down to Smith and Corey Liuget, with a not to Smith due to his potential as a true playmaker. I like the idea of a 3rd and long with Smith, James Hall, Fred Robbins and Chris Long rushing the passer.

Round 2: Daniel Thomas, RB, Kansas State
(Previous Pick: Torrey Smith, WR, Maryland)
My sense is that the Rams don't see a lot of value in the second tier of WRs, and will instead look to get some help for Steven Jackson. I also believe they'd love to see Mikel LeShoure at this spot, but I think he'll be gone and Thomas will be the next player on their list.

Round 3: Rahim Moore, S, UCLA
(Previous Pick: Jordan Todman, RB, UConn)
I expect some may scoff at the notion that Moore would still be there in Round 3. Perhaps, but I think safeties often fall in the draft in favor of CBs. If Moore is there, he would be a great addition to compensate for the loss of O.J. Atogwe.

Round 4: John Moffitt, OG, Wisconsin
    (Previous Pick: same)
I still have Moffitt in this spot, who would give the Rams a great run blocking anchor in the middle next to Jason Brown. Another guy to watch, though, is Will Rackley of Leheigh, who is scheduled to visit Rams Park before the draft.

Round 5: Austin Pettis, WR, Boise State
(Previous Pick: Doug Hogue, OLB, Syracuse)
The Rams are not going to find their "No. 1 WR" in this draft, but I think Pettis brings something to the table that the Rams don't have. He's 6'2 5/8, 209 lbs, and has great hands. As a chain-moving possession receiver/Red Zone threat, he could find a role.

Round 7: Martin Parker, DT, Richmnd
(Previous Pick: Jermele Hines, S, Ohio State)
The Rams could use more bodies at the DT spot, and Parker is an intriguing sleeper. He had 96 tackles and 5.5 sacks last year.

Round 7: Charles Clay, TE/FB, Tulsa
    (Previous Pick: same)
I think Clay is a unique specialist who could fit in well in Josh McDaniels' offense.

I love the Daniel Thomas pick, he's 6'2" and around 230 lbs. He looks to be a reliable successor for Jackson. Rahim Moore is a solid pick at safety but assuming your case is true and that safeties will fall, I'd prefer Quinton Carter because he's a Spags type player with his physical intangibles and decent coverage skills. Parker is an interesting prospect also with those stats.

I'd have no beef with Carter at that spot.

Re: Av's 7-Round Rams Mock Draft (Final Version)

Ummm sorry Av but i personally do not agree with some of the picks

I like Liuget over smith; but still like smith so im fine with that pick

There is a few reasons i do not like the Dan Thomas pick. The first is his fumbles we cannot afford to many fumbles offensively; RBs can be trained for ball security (Tikki Barber) but it does not always work (Adrian Peterson). I just dont see him helping the Rams in the run game. Just because he was brought in to Rams park does not mean he will get drafted by us. He is just not quick enough to run outside. His game will be pounding it inside and a strong goal line RB. However he does catch the ball well. I just dont see him as a good fit for us sorry.

Moore may drop and your right he is similar to OJ Atogwe and can replace him but that is the problem he is similar to OJ Atogwe. Spags likes his DBs stronger and taller than Moore. Look at the 2 DBs spags drafted Fletcher and Murphy both possess good height and are good physical tacklers...Moore wraps up well by the legs but will have problems taking down some strong WR and RBs in the NFL. Just not a spags type DB but he is good value.

Moffit is a solid pick. However i see a better option that i will reveal in my final mock draft.

Pettis has great tools and would be a good pick up but he has no burst out of his stance and the thing is i find it hard for him to make the team unless the new CBA allows more player to a team. Avery, Clayton, Danny Boy, DX, Brandon Gibson will all out play him in pre-season drills and i just do not see him beating either Gillyard or Robinson. But our WRs do have injury history so he has a chance. I like Pettis i just think he needs the opportunity to develop and idk if he will get one if our receivers are healthy(our receivers and health never mix well). lol to conclude nice pick pending the circumstances.

Parker is fine he can battle a DT spot. Nice PICK!

Clay would help McDaniels... the more i think about it maybe we should have kept Brian Leonard or maybe im just saying that because i went to Rutgers lol

The fumbling issue is a bit overstated. Yes, he had 7 fumbles last year, but that was on 325 touches (298 carries, 27 receptions). That's a pretty heavy workload. I think the good outweighs the bad (though I agree he's not likely to turn the outside corner and take it 75 yards to the house).

What have Gilyard or Robinson showed to support that comment? I'm not suggesting Pettis would come in and start, but he could contribute.

Are you ruling out Hankerson being there in Round 2 ?

Pretty much. I expect he'll be taken in the first 10 picks of the second round. If he were there, I'd be all for taking him at #47.

Actually the fumbling issue is bigger than you might think...I watched many of Thomas's highlights and saw that when he cuts and changes directions that is when he allows the ball away from his frame which is a major issue. In the NFL he will be doing many runs up the middle and if he wants to be more than a keith Totson (a straight line runner) he is going to have to use his shiftyness but when running up the middle in the NFL defenses are going to strip the ball from him.

Thomas needs a really good RB coach IMO

Well if we can find room for Pettis on the practice squad and have him develop this would be a solid pick. At this point i believe Gilliyard and Robinson just have more NFL talent.

I don't think Robinson is worth a roster spot.
