Av's First Official 2010 Rams Draft Board (12/2/09)

I'm going to do five of these (one each month) between now and the draft. As this is my first official board, here are a few ground rules. First, I am, at this stage, projecting that certain underclassmen will declare. Second, I see two scenarios here: (1) draft a franchise QB in Round 1, or (2) draft a DL in Round 1 and wait until Round 2 or 3 to take a QB. I'm still straddling that fence, as you will soon see.

So, with those thoughts in mind, here is my Top 10:

    1. Jake Locker, QB, Washington
Right now, I see Locker as the only potential franchise QB in the draft. He has elite physical tools. His production has not been overwhelming. The question that must be answered through due diligence is whether his lack of production is the product of underdeveloped skills or poor talent around him. His grasp on my top spot is tenuous, at best.

    2. Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska
He could be a definite difference maker on the DL, and he fits the mold of quick DTs who peformed well in Spagnuolo's Giant defenses. At this point, he's probably the most certain top 3 pick among all prospects.

    3. Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech
Surprised? Trust me, you won't be in the coming months. This guy has the size (6'4, 272) and productivity (12 sacks so far this year) you look for in a pass rushing prospect. He also seems to have the intangibles the Rams will be looking for, which will elevate him above guys like Carlos Dunlap and Greg Hardy. Look for him to be a star at the Combine.

    4. Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma
This is a good year at the top of the draft for DTs. McCoy rates only a hair or two below Suh, and could be just as good as a pro. A sure fire top 5 pick absent a major bump in the evaluation process.

    5. Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame
But, Av... you said there was only one potential franchise QB in the draft. Yes, that is what I believe. But I could be wrong. I want to see how Clausen measures (is he really 6'3?) and what the scouts really think of his arm strength. His game films and stats are impressive, though.

    6. Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma
But, Aaaaavvvvvvvvv.... Yeah, yeah, I know. Look, when this season started Bradford was the concensus No. 1 overall. If he's healthy and tests well, you can't count him out. Still, that whole spread offense against Big 12 defenses thing worries me.

    7. C.J.Spiller, RB, Clemson
Yes, I know the Rams don't really need a RB (at least not a starter). But Spiller, in my opinion, is much more than just a RB. I think he can do everything that Percy Harvin can do, and more. He's that good.

    8. Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State
This would be a different approach, but if the Rams win a few more games and are picking in the 7-10 range, Bryant would be a very good option. He could really elevate the WR corps and make the QB's job much easier.

    9. Eric Berry, S, Tennessee
Call this the O.J. Atogwe contingency plan. If the Rams don't sign Atogwe, and use his cap $ to fill another need in FA, then a guy like Berry, who is a great prospect, would make a lot of sense.

    10. Terrence Cody, DT, Alabama
Massive run stuffer. As with any guy his size (365 lbs.), conditioning will always be a factor. Still, if there is one thing that most great LBs have in common, its a big fat immovable slob taking up blockers in front of them.

I like that you put terrance cody in there. I dont here enough about him on the boards, he isnt as good at pass rushing as suh or McCoy but for pure run stuffing, you cant get much better

Great post AV. As always well thought-out and insightful. I am really glad to see you added Derrick Morgan. While I'm not sure where he will be slotted based on value, he's a stud in my book and addresses a huge need for us. Pressuring the QB is something we have to improve on before we can start consistently winning games. I cannot support it with names, but GT seems to send solid NFL-ready players to the draft and Morgan just adds to the list. I wouldn't be unhappy to see us grab Jonathan Dwyer in round 2 if he lasts that long, providing he declares for the draft.

Your summary of the QB's tells me we should avoid taking one with our #1 pick and wait for a later pick, perhaps round 2 with Tony Pike, if he adds some bulk to his frame.

Bottom line, we probably should stack up on defensive lineman in this draft and add OLB's where opportune not forgetting the QB position either.

    Go Rams!

QB is top heavy, D-line is deep. I think we will agree to disagree on Locker, but I think it is pretty comprehensive list

This is a good list of prospects, but I really think that Russell Okung should be in here somewhere.

Given the fact that Left OT's are a premium every year I gotta believe that a pure pass blocker like Okung is going to go in the top ten.

    WHAT SAY YE?

Okung is arguably one of the top 10 players in the draft, but not for the Rams. You can't justify paying Jason Smith as a LT and then drafting another OT who will be looking for similar money. I presume the Rams are still confident that Smith will become a top-end LT (as am I) and if Alex Barron is allowed to leave, a RT can be found in FA or the middle of the draft.

Ok, I see your point; but the same argument can be made for including C. J. Spiller in the top ten. Granted he MAY be able to do a variety of things, but the fact remains that he also will be seeking top money and still will be no more than a back up to our $50 million starter, Steven Jackson.

To be consistent probably both players, although tremendously talented, need to be left off the list as far as the Rams are concerned.

A lot of people will agree with you on that point (I know that Nick does ).

I just see something special in Spiller. Perhaps the Rams cannot afford the "luxury" of taking a guy like him, but if the guys I have listed ahead of him were already selected, I'd consider him.

    Jevan Sneed > Jake Locker

Still don't understand the hype about a guy that has a less than 1.5 TD to INT ratio and finds ways to get sacked. They were expecting Locker's numbers to explode down the stretch as they played weaker defenses, he regressed even further. 153 yards passing in a loss to Oregon State?

He also had 3 TDs and a passer rating of 151.9 in that game.

In the end, though, he was on a very bad team, so it is very hard to evaluate his stats.

I think its an excuse too many people use for locker. You can excuse the loosing, but his stats haven't been that great. Another athletic Pac 10 QB who had a similar completion percentage is kyle Boller with a 55% completion percentage. Locker has a 56% completion percentage. He doesn't have good pocket awareness he is far from a polished QB. As an athletic QB you would think he would be better making reads when to run, but he doesn't. His pass reads are even worse. He could end up being Vince Young, but that's a stretch. To take a guy like Locker its all about excellent coaching, a good run game, a good line, and most importantly patience.

I really don't want to make this thread another back and forth about Locker. He is on a bad team. That's a fact. As far as whether he'll make a good Pro... opinions will differ and time will tell.

So you post a "draft board" but nobody is supposed to discuss the players on that board. Sweet.

Is that what I said? I don't think so.

My point is, there have been many threads in which Locker's stats have been discussed, and I don't see a lot of point in rehashing those discussions. At this point, I'm waiting for two things: (1) Locker's combine/workout performances (as described by reliable observers), and (2) comments (again, from reliable sources) regarding his personality, demeanor, etc. (key qualities for a QB). If these reviews are less than stellar, there is a very good chance he will drop on my board.

Another factor will be the performaces of Colt McCoy and Tony Pike in their conference title and bowl games. As my confidence in guys like McCoy and Pike (who could be available at the top of the second round) increases, my desire to take a QB first decreases.

So... comment away about any of the players on my board. But let's look at the board as a whole, rather than focusing all attention on one guy.

    Mmmmkay?

I think Golden Tate should take Dez's place in the top ten, I dont think you can judge a player correctly when he has to sit out a year(even though its a dumb ncaa rule). And Tate has been catching everything sent his way. IMO he is what is making Classuen look good.
