Av's Free Agent "Hot List" (Revised 2/20/07)

Here's my revised list, eliminating Terdell Sands (re-signed w/Oakland) and shuffling the order a bit.

    1. Patrick Kerney, DE, Falcons
Not as big as Grant (273 lbs. to Grant's 290), but an established pass rusher. Health a concern after torn pectoral muscle ended his 2006.

    2. Ken Hamlin, FS, Seahawks
They took our two starting DEs, it would be nice to take one of their starters.

    3. Robair Smith, DT, Titans
Not a true "big DT" at 310 lbs., but has been fairly productive with the Titans.

    4. Kawika Mitchell, LB, Chiefs
A true MLB with size (253 lbs.). Would be a good addition.

    5. Dewayne White, DE, Bucs
Has not established himself as a great pass rusher, but could be untapped potential there. Did have 3 forced fumbles, 3 fumble recoveries and 7 passes defended last year.

Note: If Kris Jenkins is released by Carolina, he will immediatly go to the No. 1 spot on this list.

Honestly, if we lose Curtis which is most likely I'd add Wide Reciever Ashley Lelie to the top of the list. Has good size at 6'3" and impressive speed making him a Wide Reciever in the Red Zone and a deep threat.

    I disagree for three reasons:

    1. Clearly, our top needs are on defense.

    2. Curtis is still just the Rams' #3 WR.

    3. If the Rams want a receiver to develop behind Holt and Bruce, this is a great draft for it. The WR pool is talented and deep (I still have my eye on Johnnie Lee Higgins from UTEP, who seems to be climbing a lot of boards and could be gone in the 2nd round).

I appologize I meant add Lelie to that list.

By the way, Lelie is only 26.

Re: Av's Free Agent "Hot List" (Revised 2/19/07)

Robaire Smith could be a good grab. He played very well for the Titans as a DT before he went to the Texans. He moved position to 3-4 DE and didnt play as well, but grabbing him and moving him back to DT could be a decent move by the FO.

Right now I think a combination of Dielman/Steinbach and Thomas/White would be the wisest use of our dollars. We'd strengthen the interior line on offense and get a playmaker for defense. That would allow us to focus on DT and DE in the draft, as well as a WR.

Updated 2/20 - Charles Grant will reportedly be franchised, so I've taken him off the list.

    4. Adalius Thomas, LB, Ravens
Another big LB. Has been very productive on a very good defense. Would he be as productive with the Rams?
He's my #1 choice on D; Not bad stats the last three seasons'

    G Tkls Ast Sacks Int
    2004 Ravens 16 55.0 17 8 1
    2005 Ravens 16 69.0 15 9 2
    2006 Ravens 16 64.0 19 11 1

The plus is you can play him At MLB, SLB, or DE.

I was listening to one of the NFL Talk shows(sirius) during my drive home from work. They had Hollis Thomas of the Saints on and it sounds like he's going to be a free agent.

On the next updated list, it might be valueable to put how old each player will be next year?

If you watch the Ravens defense, he is the guy that makes everything work. He can line up everywhere on defense. He even lines up at CB sometimes, thats how good he is in coverage. And he can rush the passer aswell. He would be a great grab for us, even if we do have a lot of money tied up in LBs already.

Re: Av's Free Agent "Hot List" (Revised 2/20/07)

Not a big fan of Ian Scott. He is a smallish DT, which the Rams already have. If I was going to go that route, I'd probably look to Cory Redding (who can also play DE). I may add Redding to the list if he is not (as he is expected to be) franchised.

    Vonnie Holiday resigned with Miami.
