Av's "I'm breaking my NO TRADES rule" 7 Round Rams Mock

I generally don't include trades in my mock drafts, but it seems like the Rams are likely to make a move (or two), so here's a no-holds-barred 7 round mock.

    Trade:
Rams send pick 1:2 (2014) to Falcons
    Falcons send Rams picks 1:6 (2014), 2:37 (2014), and 3 (2015)

1(6): Jake Matthews, OT, Texas A&M
This pick just makes sense. The Rams need someone who can be a mainstay on the OL, and Matthews, who was durable and versatile at Texas A&M, is the perfect choice. Bloodlines and connection to Jeff Fisher addto the story, but the bottom line is that Matthews is an elite OT prospect.

    Trade:
    Rams send picks 1:13 (2014), 3:75 (2014) and 6:188 (2014) to Bills
Bills send Rams pick 1:9 (2014)

1(9): Mike Evans, WR, Texas A&M
Having gained extra picks trading down, the Rams can now afford to be aggressive and move up for a guy who I believe they covet. Evans has the potential to dominate smaller DBs with his size, leaping ability and physical style of play. Combining him with Tavon Austin raises exciting possibilities.

2(37): Ryan Shazier, OLB, Ohio State
This one may be a head scratcher for some, but I have a gut feeling that the Rams, particularly Gregg Williams, would love to have Shazier. Physically, he is very similar to Alec Ogletree. Williams should be able to find great ways to get these two young and athletic LBs into the backfield.

2(44): Jimmie Ward, S, Northern Illinois
The Rams address a key need here in selecting Ward, but this is no reach. Ward demonstrated strong coverage skills during Senior Bowl week, and should be ready to step in and start next to T.J. McDonald.

    4(110): Tom Savage, QB, Pittsburgh
Savage has become a real “riser” in this year’s draft. Several reports have indicated that he may have the strongest arm among the QB prospects. He’s not a guy you’d want starting as a rookie, but that’s okay, as the Rams have Sean Hill in place to back up Sam Bradford in the short run.

    5(153): Walt Aikens, CB, Liberty

Aikens is a big CB at 6’1, 203, and he has a reputation of being strong in press coverage. He should be able to compete for playing time in nickel and dime packages right away.

    6(214): John Halapio, OG, Florida
While nobody would call Halapio nimble, he is big, strong, durable and was a team captain at Florida. With the Rams’ focus on running the ball, he could challenge for astarting role early in his career.

    7(226): Rajion Neal, RB, Tennessee
Given the Rams’ desire to run the ball frequently, the Ramswill need good depth behind Zac Stacy. Neal has good size (5’11, 211), and is a no-nonsense North/South runner. He has also demonstrated ability in pass protection and catching the ball out of the backfield. He would likely compete with Isaiah Pead for a spot.

7(249): Jonathan Dowling, S, Western Kentucky
Dowling has been in several of my mocks. His college career was disjointed (dismissed from UF by Urban Meyer for violation of team rules) , but his size and athletic ability suggest a potential diamond in the rough.

    7(250): Zack Kerr, DT, Delaware
Big 6’1, 326 run stuffer could help the Rams keep their starters fresh. Perhaps not a future starter, but could stick in the rotation. Reputation as a mature, hard working player.

    LOL.

For the record, Halapio was not one of the Gators involved in that blooper:

I'm curious whom you see the Falcons trading for into our #2 spot. The conventional wisdom, which changes weekly has the Texans taking Clowney. Is K. Mack worth that price to the Falcons?

My other question which won't be answered until they pick is that many see the Bucs taking Evans at #7. In that case whom would you think we'd be taking at #13 since a trade with Buffalo is not going to happen. Incidentally, I agree with you that I think the Rams covet Evans, making me wonder if they take him at #6 and an OT at #13 (Lewan) or trade down to take Zach Martin in the teens.

I agree that Savage is rising quickly among QB's. His stats though are mostly terrific from last year, not a lengthy resume. A QB name that recently caught my eye is Bryn Renner from NC, great 4-year stats and a coaches kid so he knows the drill. Plenty of intrigue.

    Go Rams!

    My thought would be:

    1. Houston - Bortles
    2. Atlanta - Clowney
    3. Jacksonville - Mack
    4. Cleveland - Manziel
    5. Oakland - Robinson
    6. St. Louis - Matthews
    7. Tampa Bay - Watkins
    8. Minnesota - Bridgewater
    9. St. Louis - Evans

Gutsy call, 3 QB's in the top 8. We'll see. It would kill me to see us pass on Watkins at #6, but as we agreed the Rams seem to prefer Evans at WR, I just hope we can get him as you indicate.

    Go Rams!

That was allot of fun AvR I really enjoyed seeing your choices! I prefer Lewan over the versatillity of Jake M. but if our big Jake Long is ready to rumble for starting day then lil Jake is the most versatile Oh Lineman in this draft. imho

Love Evans so much in this draft he is my number one wideout! I know you had him pegged early as well, so nice when we agree. I still would prefer A.J. or your boy Jimmy G. at QB but so many of these QB's this year could be really great or just so so back ups hard to call it for me this year. You covered most of our needs and made some fun trades I expect to see something like this or even more trades for us in this draft, so nice of you to include some possiable scenarios! All around good job- I could be happy with your draft in a huge way, even if some of my fave lads got left off...

So, what you're saying is that the thought of Pead finally living up to his expectations is INCONCEIVABLE!

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Love the mock. I personally think Shazier, Ward, and Savage are off the board before those picks, but if they're there, it'd be a great middle draft haul for the Rams IMO.

    Avenger,

I like your mock and would be pretty content if this is how we roll in May. But I have a question and a comment for your perusal.

1.) What makes you think that the Rams are interested in Mike Evans, interested enough to expend assets to trade up for him?

2.) I would feel a lot better if you had addressed the corner position before the 5th and with someone other than a guy from a D11 school.

    WHAT SAY YE?

He paid a visit to Rams Park, so there clearly is some interest.
The fact that they also met with Kelvin Benjamin tells me they want a big WR. The rest is gut feeling.

That's fair. I considered taking a CB in Round 2, but went with Shazier instead. If he is gone, I'd look at the remaining CBs.
