Av's UPDATED 2014 Rams Draft Board (Version 2.0)

    Time for an update!

Here is my current draft board for the Rams.

By way of explanation, this list should not be read as an indication that I think a player such as Travis Swanson is a better prospect than Jadeveon Clowney, Anthony Barr, Teddy Bridgewater, or any other likely Top 10 pick that does not appear on my list. Rather, players of those type will simply be gone before they could ever reach the top of my list, so I have left them out.

So... pending the final underclassmen declarations and the Senior Bowl, this is my current list:

    1. Jake Matthews, OT, Texas A&M (Sr) 6’5, 305
    2. Greg Robinson, OT, Auburn (rSo) 6’5, 320
    3. Sammy Watkins, WR, Clemson (Jr) 6’1, 205
    4. Taylor Lewan, OT, Michigan (rSr) 6’7, 315
    5. Mike Evans, WR, Texas A&M (rSo) 6’5, 225
    6. Darqueze Dennard, CB, Michigan State (Sr) 5’11, 197
    7. Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma State (Sr) 6’0, 200
    8. RaShede Hagerman, DT, Minnesota (rSr) 6’6, 311
    9. David Yankey, OG, Stanford (Jr) 6'5, 312

    10. Kelvin Benjamin, WR, Florida State (rSo) 6’5, 235
    11. Hasean Clinton-Dix, S, Alabama (Jr) 6’1, 206
    12. Louis Nix, DT, Notre Dame (rJr) 6’2, 345
    13. Ed Reyonlds, S, Stanford (rJr), 6'2, 206
    14. Cyrus Kouandjio, OT, Alabama (Jr) 6’5, 310
    15. Calvin Pryor, S, Louisville (Jr) 6’2, 208
    16. Timmy Jernigan, DT, Florida State (Jr) 6’2, 298
    17. Allen Robinson, WR, Penn State (Jr) 6’3, 210
    18. Cyril Richardson, OG, Baylor (rSr) 6’5, 340
    19. Kyle Fuller, CB, Virginia Tech (Sr) 6’0, 194
    20. Deone Buchannon, S, Washington State (Sr) 6’1, 215

    Nice list, Barry.

53 players deep... wow! I'll probably expand mine as I revise it (post Senior Bowl, post Combine, etc.) and get to 50 eventually.

Yankey is a guy that I might have to add to my top 20 if he declares.

Re: Av's UPDATED 2014 Rams Draft Board (Version 2.0)

I would have added Xavier Su'a-Filo OG, UCLA to the list. He's likely to be a 2nd rounder at a position of need for us. Ryan Groy is also missing OG, Wisconsin, another highly rated OG. We may be very actively scouting this spot, particularly if we don't sign Saffold.

    Go Rams!

Av, what are you thoughts of this year's safety class (better or worse than last years)? Do you see the Rams taking one in the first 3 rounds of the draft?

At this point, I'd say that last year's class looked a bit better, with guys like Vaccaro, Reid and Elam at the top. That said, its still early, and if the top prospects run well, I might say its pretty comparble to last year.

My top 5 at the position is currently:

    1. Hasean Clinton-Dix, Alabama
    2. Calvin Pryor, Louisville
    3. Deone Buchannon, Washington State
    4. Dion Bailey, USC
    5. Craig Loston, LSU

(Lamarcus Joyner, FSU, could also be on the list if you consider him a S - I see him more of a slot CB/S hybrid)

I would be very surprised if the Rams don't take a safety in the first three rounds.

dion bailey might not be the fastest, biggest guy, even played linebacker the first two years he started before moving back to safety

but the dude is just a football player

    always around the ball/ball carrier

gonna have a great career, whether he ends up on the rams or not, i'm excited to see him in the nfl despite being disappointed he's not coming back, then again he's a RS junior so...

it was kind of expected for him to leave

You can take Cedric Ogbuehi off the list. He's returning to A&M for another yaer.

Interested in your take on Benjamin: at the moment, I like him better than Evans, but I've seen less on both of them than I'd like to. Both seem like strong prospects to me. What's the discerning factor that puts Evans four places higher?

Where do you see Travis Swanson going? I'm intrigued with taking a Center in the draft at some point as I think it's a position of need. Obviously Barrett Jones could be the answer but it's kind of telling he didn't see the field already with all the injuries the Rams had on the line last year.

Evans is much more a finished product at this point. In particular, I think he uses his size to greater advantage than Benjamin, who is very good at the jump ball, but does not always "box out" defenders on passes thrown at pad level.

I would not argue with those who suggest that Benjamin could potentially have a higher ceiling, but he's not there yet. That is why I think he really should consider playing one more year at FSU.

Swanson probably will be taken in the second round, though he could sneak into the late first if there is a team with a glaring need at center. I'd strongly consider him at #44, allowing Jones to play OG.

I've updated my board to account for some of the underclassmen decisions that had not been announced when I first posted by board.
