Surgery knocks Mizzou receiver Alexander out of NFL combine

Danario Alexander, the leading receiver for the Missouri Tigers last season and a potential top 120 draft pick, had surgery on his left knee Tuesday, SI.com has learned. He has been ruled out of participating in next week's combine and his pro-day workout, but is expected to be ready for training camps.

Alexander, who caught 113 passes last season for 1,781 yards and 14 touchdowns, originally hurt his knee while participating at the Senior Bowl in January. His knee swelled after practice on Wednesday, but there was little pain, so he played in the game that Saturday. The following week an MRI showed Alexander had a defect in the cartilage of the left knee. A team of specialists, including Dr. James Andrews, consulted with Alexander and recommended surgery.

He's the second receiver this week to be ruled out of the combine. SI.com reported Wednesday that former Georgia Tech wideout Demaryius Thomas will not participate due to a broken foot.

That's a shame, because now it appears the only offseason work he'll have to stand on is his Senior Bowl work, which didn't sound incredibly positive based on numerous reports.

Maybe he'll slip to round two now. I wouldn't mind taking a long look at him if he did.

Sucks for him, but awesome news for the Rams in my opinion. Now instead of a 2nd or 3rd, a 4th might get him.

Exactly . I wish we got him in the third or fourth.

you guys dont realize some were saying he was 4th round at first...with this new injury and the huge blood red flag rasied about his knees and durability, i see him falling all the way to the 6th maybe even 7th....

Exactly. He wasn't projected to be gone in the first few rounds anyways...and honestly there aren't going to be that many WR's drafted in the first round. I'm going to go ahead and say two..maybe three. This isn't a very good WR class.

I guess we'll just have to disagree on his prior positioning. He's been a low 2nd / high 3rd projection for a while. However, personally, I hope you're right. I hope this pushes him down to 3rd day (how weird to talk about the draft's 3rd day, right?) for the Rams.
