Billy D on the draft

Regarding the Dorsey question, he said that they really like him and he is a special kid. They have no medical concerns and would have no problem with both he and AC at tackle. He further stated that would take pressure of the OLB's and help their edge rush. This wa on St.Louis radio 1380 yesterday.

While what he says is probably true, I still think it could be just smoke.

I admit that could be an impressive interior rush, and I believe both Dorsey and Carriker are great run stopping UTs. However, two single gap DTs seems to put a lot of pressure on our MLB, if you ask me. I, for one, won't be all that excited to see Spoon taking on interior linemen more often.

Hub, I think his idea is that with both those guys in there, they'd have to commit all three interior guys to them, and that would then mean that the OT's need to go one on one with the ends, and that would leave the blitzers free unless they left someone in protection.

In the passing game, yes. However, my concern is for the run game. Quick backfield penetration is one thing, but if both DTs are shooting single gaps, there is a hole and a free OL to lead the way. Haslett's a smart guy, I'm sure he won't have both DTs playing 1-gap, but still that puts either Carriker or Dorsey with NT responsibility, which IMO is a poor utilization.

But hey, whatever. Dorsey, Long & Gholston all could help this defense.

I'm starting to think that Dorsey is the smoke screen. I think that Devaney believes we have our DT situation controlled with Ryan and Carriker. I think that they are saying "Dorsey is our guy" to have teams like the Falcons who love dorsey are willing to trade up even one spot to snag their guy.

yes, but Falcons are not "trading up".....I covered that already, mooselini - remember?:)

Thomas Dimitroff is the new Falcons GM - he was "director of college scouting" for the New England Patriots the last 5 years. Dimitroff cloaks himself in "the Patriot Way" and says he's bringing his/Pioli's and Belichicks philosophies to the A-T-L.


Q: "What do the Patriots do - trade up - or trade down?"
A: They trade down.

I am not saying the Falcons "will" trade down but I would be totally SHOCKED if they traded up from #3 to #2.........it just want happen.

Of course Billy Devaney worked for the Atlanta Falcons as recently as 5 months ago so maybe he's just trying to "tweak" the Falcons with all the Dorsey talk - but I can guarantee you the Falcons will not give up a 2nd round pick to move up one spot to take Dorsey - it won't happen.

Two things...

1) OTs won't necessarily have to go one on one if the opposition leaves a tight end or RB in pass protection.

2) We spent two Top 15 picks on defensive linemen but still have to blitz to get to the QB?

With or without Dorsey, Hall is basically a marginal starter and Adeyanju is a run stopping specialist. Dorsey's addition won't suddenly turn them into double digit sack artists. Who knows how much Little will contribute on the stat sheet this season, and he may be done after this year.

The more this front office says about a prospect, the more they come off as if they're blowing smoke. Devaney coming out and making specific statements about Dorsey continues to lead me to believe they're trying to inspire a team to trade up.

He never actually said they have no medical "concerns", he said they have no medical "questions". He then quickly changed the subject. No definitive statement that the Rams have given Dorsey a clean bill of health. Not sure what it all means, but it makes me wonder.

I suspect we'd have them alternate between single and double gap responsibilities. If they could pull it off, it would make it very difficult for offensive lines because they wouldn't know which one was designated to rush the passer on any given play. That said, I do see problems with the prospect of drafting Dorsey.
