He didn't pull out the gun and shoot it. It went off by accident which is still his fault for thinking guns and sweatpants go well together. I guess he was looking out for himself because his teammate Steve Smith was robbed at gunpoint a week earlier but he had a lot of problems before this happened. People could also argue those things were blown out of proportion by the New York media though.

If Spags thinks he's not as bad as he's made out to be then taking him wouldn't be bad because he's a great receiver and could really help the offense. Just look at how the Giants' offense went downhill when he wasn't playing.

As a legal matter, this is not an accident, its called negligence. Nothing but LUCK that he didnt shoot someone else rather than himself. I dont care how many of his teammates were robbed. Any idiot knows you cant carry a handgun in nyc without a permit and those permits are very hard to get. There is no reason why he should be let off just because he is an athlete. This carries mandatory jail time because it is negligence and greatly endangers public safety. This is like saying that someone went out drag racing and then got into an "accident" because he lost control of the car. Sure, he didnt shoot of the gun on purpose, but merely carrying it (and not just in sweatpants) puts people at risk. The law is the law and this is a jail offense. If he is worried about getting robbed, he doesnt need to be in a nightclub at 1am.
