    Re: Carriker to be traded

"...The Rams are expected to re-sign backup Gary Gibson to augment a defensive-line group headed by Clifton Ryan, Fred Robbins and Darell Scott..."

I get so exicted when I think of the great pass rush and superb run-stuffing abiities of these headers. I cant wait to jump on that draft Bradford bandwagon while the Lions snatch up what could be the next Lawrence Taylor type difference maker.

And that was Carriker? He hadn't shown it, and didn't make it past 2nd squad with Spags before being hurt. Let's keep an under-achieving out of scheme DT coming off a serious season-ending injury making 1st round money and hope he can be the starter that he never was.

If we had just traded for a guy with that description, the reaction would be quite negative I think, but instead we get rid of the guy, and the reaction is again negative? Carriker was never going to be a success here, and was nothing more than depth at this point. So we weren't going to have a starter if we kept him, and we weren't going to get a starter in return if we dealt him. So where was this starter we need going to come from?

    Great signing. Excellent depth.

My biggest problem with it is the price, we really only moved a few spots in the draft, and while Carricker might not be difference maker for us, he could be for them!

Not in the 5th round. My stance is that we have neither upgraded, nor downgraded at DT by making this move. Rather we have kept it static. The only net is that Chippy Boy saved hisself a million dollars. (Oh yeah...Carriker's contract really isn't that much)

we moved up a lot of picks, from the bottom of the 5th to the top...considering what carriker's value is (nothing) and what he's done for this team since we drafted him (nothing) this isn't a bad deal at all people..

I think we've learned two things here:

    1. Don't trust the PD to accurately report the details; and

    2. Carriker probably wasn't going to make the team.

When's the last time we've done something productive with any 5th rounder?

    2007-Clifton Ryan.

    HOWEVER....before that 2001-Jerametrius Butler and 2000-Bryan Young.

So....3 guys of marginal ability for a decade's worth of picks.

    I remain unenthused.

of course it isn't THAT much, but hey, a dollar is a dollar. Why pay more for the same thing? We probably just cut him if we don't make this deal, I doubt we could have picked up more than an extra 7th rounder, if that, given the price of trades, but instead we move up a lot in the 5th. I seriously doubt there much of a market for a DT like him, hasn't done much and sat out a year with an injury.

In some other thread, you stated that the past does not matter since that was an old regime, with old staff, old coaches, and old FO personnel.

Yet, the drafting of 10 years ago is now a factor?

I'm a little confused. What did you expect for Carriker?

I'd prefer an additional pick...any additional pick over keeping the same number of chances of likely screwing up.

Well...alternatively you could say that Devaney personally is 0 for 2 in this round, but I included the decade-wide sample to hit on the wider point....namely we don't get decent players in notable quantities out of the 5th round, regardless of where we select.

So you would prefer an extra seventh round pick over moving up in the 5th. While the seventh very very rarely pans out, the 5th round still has valuable players available, and can also be used as trade bait. Like you said we need starters not depth, and moving up in the 5th round gives us a much better chance of getting a starter.
