Corey Chavous
All this talk about Hope and Huff ... Why not sign Corey Chavous if he isn't resigned?

Re: Corey Chavous
Chavous is on the down side of his career. His best season is three years ago in 2003, and his production in 2004 and 2005 didn't come close to what he achieved previously. His speed and acceleration is diminishing. He has a veteran's instincts and experience, but probably can not be counted on in man to man as much as he used to.
That said, he's still a talented player who could work at either strong safety or free safety. He has good deep zone coverage skills and takes good angles to the ball. He's physical and will support the run. I don't know if there's any connection with Linehan due to Scott's time in Minnesota, since they worked on opposite sides of the ball.
If he could be brought in for a reasonable contract, he'd be good to look at. But I'm not sure what kind of contract demands he's going to have. He held out during the spring of 2005 because he was unhappy with his contract. I'm not sure that's really the kind of guy we're looking for.

Re: Corey Chavous
Aneas Williams did pretty well for us on the downside of his career. At the right contract, this guy would be worth a look.

Re: Corey Chavous
I'm not going to write this guy off, but Aeneus was a Pro-Bowl corner who converted to safety. What he lost in speed was compared to what you expect from a no. 1 cornerback, so he could still play at safety speed reasonably well. Chavous went to the Pro Bowl once in 2003 when he had 8 ints. which is conveniently the same number of picks in his 5 years prior to 2003. IMO, he'd probably be competent but not the best solution.

Re: Corey Chavous
I'm not trying to suggest that Chavous is on Williams' level. He is not and never will be. My point is that guys on the downswing of their career can still provide competency and stability. Competency at the safety position would be an upgrade from last year and stability is sorely needed.

Re: Corey Chavous
Chavous is a big draft nut, and I think has been a part of the draft coverage for like 2-3 years now. But he's got Reggie McNeal ranked as his #1 prospect this year, so that only furthers my point that he's losing it.

With all the hype Mcneal is getting from Corey, they must be related somehow. Chavous said Mcneal was Vince Young before there was even Vince Young.

Re: Corey Chavous
Chavous is 30 yrs old. He's an 8 yr veteran. He's OK. He can be rather erratic in his play. Although this past season wasn't bad. He's no Williams though. Not even close.
