I'd be in favor of a reasonable signing for him. He missed most of last year, but prior to that he's only missed 4 games in 8 seasons. If Fisher thinks he has enough left in the tank and can get a reasonable price for him, it might be quite the steal.

He hasn't had any other teams interested so far, so we might be able to get him on the cheap.

YES!!!!!!! If we can lock him up I will be ECSTATIC. Two years ago he was the top 4-3 OLB according to PFF. The guy is a great player and we could get him for extremely cheap. Sign him up!!

Sure, why not? Not a long term solution, but could help fill a need for a year or two if he's healthy.

    Here's a write-up on the story:

Daryl Smith finds possible suitor in St. Louis Rams

Former Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Daryl Smith came in at No. 65 on Gregg Rosenthal's list of the top 85 free agents this offseason. Prior to last year, he was one of the best 4-3 outside linebackers of the past half-decade.
It took three weeks, but Smith finally has found a suitor. The linebacker is visiting the St. Louis Rams on Monday, a source informed of his plans told NFL.com's Ian Rapoport. The visit was first reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter.
The lack of interest to date could be reflective of outsized salary demands. Of course, it's not unusual for NFL teams to be leery of a 31-year-old linebacker coming off a season lost to a lingering groin injury.
If healthy, though, Smith could be a steal this late in free agency. The Rams' depth chart has a glaring vacancy at strong-side linebacker following Rocky McIntosh's departure.
Smith annually has been one of the rare bright spots on the Jaguars' roster as one of the NFL's most underrated players.

This is where the good GM's make there money. Last year it was Dunbar about this time when we signed him and he was the steal this late in free agency.

Looking at his numbers on ESPN the last three year he's been solid.

    From a Jags fan...

Smith is a fan favorite but an aging linebacker on a rebuilding roster. Nonetheless he is still a top 4-3 OLB when healthy. PFF annually considers him one of the most underrated players in the NFL. Would be a great compliment to Laurinaitis. He still has probably 3-4 solid years left in him. Hope he signs with you and wins himself a championship…the man deserves it.

Could be a good move at the right price. Don't forget, Jeff Fisher coached against this guy 2x every year, so he's got some familiarity.

    Go Rams!

The St. Louis Rams have been on the lookout for a linebacker to play alongside James Laurinaitis.
Maybe they’ve found the one they are seeking. The club is hosting free agent Daryl Smith on a visit today, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN, and he would bring a wealth of experience playing on the strong side.Rams coach Jeff Fisher has to know Smith well from their days together in the AFC South. Smith played for the Jacksonville Jaguars for nine seasons. Some thought the 31-year-old might prove to be a match for the Chicago Bears where former Jaguars defensive coordinator Mel Tucker went, but that didn’t materialize.Smith missed 14 games last season with a groin injury but he is believed to be fully healthy now.
I like that term "a wealth of experience playing on the strong side."

Re: Daryl Smith comes in for a visit

Just found this little snippet on WalterFootball's 2004 re-mock draft:

St. Louis Rams: Daryl Smith, OLB, Georgia Tech
Actual 2004 NFL Draft Pick: Steven Jackson, RB
My 2004 NFL Mock Draft Pick: Jason Babin, DE

Daryl Smith is one of the most underrated players in the NFL. I say he's an upgrade over Tommy Polley.

And still an upgrade over Mario Hagaan.

Re: Daryl Smith comes in for a visit

The more starters we can lock up in free agency, the more flexibility we have in the draft. HE might only be a stopgap for a year to three years, but that give a late round pick or UDFA time to develop behind him and be a big time value pickup.

Given that we went after TE, LT, DE(re-sign), and now SLB, you gotta think that we're looking at OG, WR and Safety in the draft. We need CB depth, but there are a ton on the market just waiting for barely above minimum deals.
    I believe!

When was that done? They actually suggested taking Daryl Smith over Steven Jackson?!

I think he does these a few years after each draft. He wasn't saying we should have taken Daryl Smith over Steven Jackson, because in his re-mock draft, Steven Jackson is already off the board.

Wouldn't argue with this signing. I still wonder what they are going to do to clear the cap space they need for draft picks though.

The Rams are also hosting Jacksonville outside linebacker Daryl Smith on a free-agent visit this week. Smith is scheduled to arrive tonight.
Looks like he came in late Monday so maybe we hear something today. I'm sure the will want him to pass a physical. I would like to sign him and Quintin Mikell that would be a very solid finish.

Free agent LB Daryl Smith (Jacksonville) finishing up his Rams visit. Things have yet to reach the point where he's been offered a contract.
