Devin Hester expected to decide today about future

NCCA | Hester's NFL decision coming Monday
Sun, 1 Jan 2006 19:50:42 -0800

Tim Reynolds, of the Associated Press, reports with speculation rampant that he'll skip his senior season; Miami KR/CB Devin Hester will announce Monday, Jan. 2, whether he'll enter the NFL Draft or return for one more year with the Hurricanes. Miami officials said Sunday night, Jan. 1, that they had not heard if Hester, one of the nation's top return specialists, has definitively decided one way or another.

Re: Devin Hester expected to decide today about future

ESPN.com is now reporting that Hester will declare because of his family's financial situation.

Hester is going to be an interesting wild card on draft day. You can expect that he'll run the 40 in under 4.4, perhaps under 4.3. That, coupled with his prowess on kick returns (demonstrated more in 2004 than this year) will tempt teams to give him a look as early as the second round.

I'd caution anyone, the Rams included, not to overspend on Hester. He's an incredible athlete, and could be a top kick returner, but he's not an every down player, either at CB or on offense.

That said, if he were to slip to the 4th round, I'd take him in a heartbeat.

That, and because Miami got a whipping and team morale is low.

I agree with your general assessment. Hester on the second day would be great, but without a true position, I think it's going to be hard for a team in need of an immediate player to view Hester as an option.

I agree. I just think that he's the type of player that might go earlier than he should because some team will drool over his 40 time.
