Draft Buzz: Geno Smith-Jaguars chatter picking up?

Draft Buzz: Geno Smith-Jaguars chatter picking up?

We're one month away from April's NFL draft, and the gossip machine is churning at full blast. Try to keep up.

Let's start in Jacksonville, where the Jaguars -- with the second overall pick -- are being linked to a quarterback.

"I'm always skeptical of draft rumblings during this time of year," NFL.com's Daniel Jeremiah tweeted Tuesday, "but I've heard several league sources mention (the Jaguars and West Virginia's Geno Smith)."

It makes sense when you consider that new Jaguars coach Gus Bradley inherited Blaine Gabbert, the embattled young passer set to play for his third head coach in as many seasons (four, if you count interim coach Mel Tucker in 2011). Bradley saw first-hand in Seattle what Russell Wilson's emergence meant for the Seahawks, but rolling the dice on Smith at No. 2 feels like a wild reach.

As Jeremiah instructed, skepticism is essential, but the whispers don't bother the Jaguars one bit. If the Jaguars can entice some quarterback-needy team to trade up, they've pulled a major coup.

Other rumblings from around the league ...

After telling "NFL AM" he believes Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o is destined to go in the first round, NFL Network's Mike Mayock projected former LSU star Tyrann Mathieu as a third- or fourth-round pick.

"I think there was a buzz right after the combine," Mayock said. " ... He's built three or four months of equity, not two or three or four years of equity where he's been clean and where he's looking teams in the eye saying, 'Believe in me because I'm off all the pot,' and all the rest of that. So I don't think he's going to go in the first two rounds. That's my gut and in talking to teams, it's a third- or fourth-round pick is what I'm hearing."

Mary Kay Cabot of The Plain Dealer reports that the Browns plan to bring in Arizona quarterback Matt Scott for a visit in early April. With free agency netting nothing new for Cleveland on the quarterback front, it wouldn't be a surprise to see the Browns find competition for Brandon Weeden in the draft. Scott is a rising prospect who would give coach Rob Chudzinski a player with read-option experience, something Weeden isn't about to master.

Anyone that has watched Blaine Gabbard knows that the Jaguars, Bills and Raiders are all trying to find a new QB., it may be round 1 or 2 or via trade....but all the QB teams lie and the need is huge....

heck the Chiefs may even take G. Smith.....things will heat up even through there isn't a bradford, newton, luck rg3 at top..

It's a bad year to be looking for a franchise QB. Any Mizzou fan could have told the Jags that Gabbert would never make it in the NFL. Million dollar arm and 10 cent brain.

As to whether or not the Jags pull the trigger on Smith? I don't know. But I beat they'd much rather take a pick a few spots back and have an extra pick later on to play with. If they HAVE to stay at #2, I think one of the top defensive players is more valuable than Smith. That defense (especially the pass rush) was terrible last year.
