Re: Expectations for Chris Long
Depends, I'm not sure what his output will be his first year but I have no doubt it will be 12+ for the majority of his NFL years. And he definitely provides all the other things mentioned.

Re: Expectations for Chris Long
I ask this because I think I have lower expectations 7-8 sacks high motor, leadership, and playmaker. I want him because he is a all round great football player and locker room guy.
I compare him to Grant Wistrom, his numbers...
2006 Seattle Seahawks 16 16 37 30 7 4.0 -- 1 -- -- 0.0 -- -- -- --
2005 Seattle Seahawks 16 16 52 41 11 4.0 -- 6 -- -- 0.0 -- -- -- --

Grant had 11 sacks once and 9 in a year. avg. about 5 per year.Last edited by Rambos; -02-25-2008 at 07:11 PM.

Re: Expectations for Chris Long
As I posted on another board, Wistrom can't hold Chris Long's jock. A much better comparison would be fellow UVa alum, and all-Pro, Patrick Kerney. For a reference point, ask a Seachickens fan to compare Wistrom and Kerney.

Re: Expectations for Chris Long
7-8 is the most reasonable every down rookies DE's don't just come in and dominate, but he could pull a Mario Williams mediocre first season then crazy second season. Thats what he did in Virginia mediocre when it came to sacks his first year then just exploded his second year

Re: Expectations for Chris Long
Well, he had 2 things working against him when he arrived at UVa. 1) he played in an absolutely abysmal private school league in high school so the step up was immense and 2) he got mono his first year, so his sophomore year was his real first year and it still was bound to take a while to acclimate with the pace of college ball
I agree that he'll be better his second year than his first but I think he'd have a pretty big impact as a rookie. 8-10 sacks and stout run defense.

Re: Expectations for Chris Long
He'd have 12...if hes on another team playing us.
But if hes in blue and gold, 7-8 his rookie year.

Re: Expectations for Chris Long
Wistrom 5.8 sacks per year, and Kerney 8 per. Kerney is great, but he started slow first two years avg. 2.5 per. Hags fans will tell us how great he is coming off his best year ever 14.5 sacks. As I posted on another board, Wistrom can't hold Chris Long's jock. A much better comparison would be fellow UVa alum, and all-Pro, Patrick Kerney. For a reference point, ask a Seachickens fan to compare Wistrom and Kerney.
Kerney took time to get it going, third year he started to payoff. So how many sacks do you really think Long will get in his first year?Last edited by Rambos; -02-25-2008 at 10:35 PM.

Re: Expectations for Chris Long
I hate to say it, but I agree fully. Our pass rush last year was horrid, which is why we're after him of course, but I'm not sure if we have a DL that will force teams to make a decision on whom to double yet. And I say yet, because with Long, AC and Ryan all young and upcoming, I think the three of them plus a speed rusher to replace Little in a year or three will make up an amazing front line. If Little find his dominant self again, we could see that this year and then I might see double digits for Long.
