A few draft questions from the latest Jim Thomas chat...
A couple of nuggets...
-Rams looking at tape of Dez Bryant and CJ Spiller (go, Av!)
-Thomas isn't betting on a first round QB at this point
-Thomas: Clausen is a "borderline first-round quarterback"
-Thomas agrees that McCoy or Pike could be there in round two
Here are the specific questions/answers. Should be good fodder for more discussion, at the very least!
icedram: hey jt, as always thanks for these weekly chats.
is there any more word on who the rams have been reviewing tape on lately? I read somewhere a few weeks ago it was no secret they were reviewing tape on Dez Bryant.
I honestly don't feel the Rams will go QB in the first round, given all the questions on them and considering the higher talent of players ahead of them in key positions, being WR And D-line. I can't imagine Devaney reaching for a claussen/locker type while dez bryant or suh are on the boards, provided they fit the 4 pillars.
And how do the Rams feel about a Dan Lefevour or a Tony Pike? I'd be all for a tony pike in the 3rd round, but i think they go WR/DT in first 2 rounds.
Jim Thomas: You read that (Dez Bryant) here. They've also looked at a lot of Spiller tape. But they're going to look at tons of tape. It's like the old deal about "Who did the Rams talk to at the combine?" They talk to basically everybody at the combine.
As for drafting a QB, if I had to bet, I'd say no QB in the first round, barring a trade down.Cousin Vinny: JT,
Clauson and or Golden Tate?
Would you take either one?
Jim Thomas: To me, Clausen is a borderline first-round quarterback. His play is inconsistent, and I wonder about his ability to throw the deep ball. (Not that the Rams throw any deep balls!) I do like Tate, although not enough to take top five. He may be the second best WR in the draft behind Dez Bryant.Bobby: Good afternoon and thank you for your time.
So I was against the idea of the Rams drafting Suh (thinking another DT and from NE) but then I watched the Big 12 championship. As a huge longhorn fan, wow was I impressed with how he dominated. So now Im thinking the rams should draft him (if hes there) and then go qb in the 2nd round (wont cost as much $$$).
If you agree with this approach, do you think Colt McCoy could drop there?or Pike from Cinnci? Or who would you target? Then go get Denario Alexander in the 3rd round?
Thanks again!
Jim Thomas: I do think there's a possibility that either McCoy or Pike could be there in the second round.
As for Alexander in Round 3, I would jump on that.

Suh/McCoy for the first two rounds would be absolutely amazing.
And...
"His play is inconsistent, and I wonder about his ability to throw the deep ball. (Not that the Rams throw any deep balls!)"
This just made me laugh hysterically.

Dez Bryant or if Eric Berry is there, are my top two choices right now.
With Suh and Locker a close 2nd.RamsFan16

1. Suh
2. McCoy/Pike
3. Alexander
I have to admit, those three rounds would make me do the happy dance."Before the gates of excellence the high gods have placed sweat; long is the road thereto and rough and steep at first; but when the heights are reached, then there is ease, though grievously hard in the winning." --- Hesiod

Re: A few draft questions from the latest Jim Thomas chat...
If Tate is the 2nd best WR in this Draft, I would advise staying away from all WR's.
Bryant is clear cut number one and everyone would like to have him (me included), but anyone that thinks TATE is the #2 pro WR is nuts.
He isn't a good route runner, has below average hands.
There is 4 or 5 guys better than him in this draft, and this draft is weak at the WR positon.
I don't know if he could even get snaps on the Rams never mind a playoff team in the NFL.
Please don't waste a top 3 round pick on this guy.
thats alll.

I would love that. Taking Suh in round one is the thing to do. We can snag a QB in round two.
We filled two needs with good players in the first two rounds, what says we can't do it again?[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]
Devaney, if you care about this team... fire the offensive coordinator!!!!

The biggest problem with our receiver corps is its youth. Adding a rookie to that unit will not correct that problem.

Good point, if at all possible it would be nice to find another reciever through FA, someone to mentor these young guys. I say take Suh if he's there in the 1st round and in the second take the BPA, if there isn't a qb available or one worth taking maybe take a DE. A healthy Bulger won't set this team back next year IMO, sure he's not what he was before and there is a need for a qb of the future but there are also plenty of other areas that this team could improve with a 2nd round pick. Just my opinion, I could be wrong. ( My wife says I usually am.)

Re: A few draft questions from the latest Jim Thomas chat...
He's open and catching the balls with his body, the way Heyward Bey did alot of last year.
He is undersized. If you watch him play, you won't see him make too many catches with his hands away from the body (forming the triangle thumbs and forefingers.) He is more like a hybrid player (Reggie Bush type), but I don't think he is shifty enough. He has more straight away speed and is pretty strong.
I think he would be a good kick returner and maybe a developmental 5WR on a team that can try to work him into something.
