Which former Giants SS would you rather have on the Rams?

    James Butler or Gibril Wilson?

Both have played under Spags and look as if they'll hit the free agent market. The Rams have a hole in their secondary at SS.

The planets are aligning for one of these two to be potential replacements for Corey Chavous. Which of the two would you prefer, or is there a third party you'd take ahead of both of them?

Wilson wasn't worth the money Oakland paid him and he was released after he didn't exactly set the world on fire.

Butlet hasn't exactly set the world on fire.

Wilson is 6'0, 210lbs and was a fifth round pick in the 2004 NFL Draft.
Butler is 6'3, 215lbs, and went undrafted in 2005.

I think Butler will cost us less, and Wilson's stock will be buoyed by the strong performance of DeAngelo Hall after he was released by Oakland.

Both, I fear, aren't going to dominate in the defense that we have at the moment, but Butler definitely has all the physical tools to be successful.

Still, it's almost a coin toss.

    Butler.

Gibril Wilson, I believe asked for his release during the 08 season. He was unhappy in Oakland and it cleared some cap space for them.

As far as not lighting the world on fire, in 2008 he lead all defensive backs with 129 tackles, in addition to his 2 INT, 6 passes defended, and 1.5 sacks.

By comparison, James Butler had 68 tackles, 3 INT, 10 passes defended, and 0 sacks.

Gibril had perhaps more tackle opportunities, as Raider opponents were likely ahead more often leading to their running the ball more, coupled with the fact the Giants front front seven is better than Oakland's. Not as many guys breaking into the backfield .. limiting tackling opportunities perhaps.

I don't know enough about either one to make an informed decision, but either one would surely be an upgrade over the departed Cory C.

Gibril Wilson is a better player is a better player, but when you think about the cap number and all the Rams other needs you have to go with the solid and more cost effective Butler

I don't think tackles alone tell the story, especially with safeties. In the other categories, both players were in the same ballpark. As Maui suggested, the number of tackles a defensive back has is probably conducive to the state of the defense he was playing in.

I'm sure thats true to a certain extent, but i dont think you can completely disregard the fact that 129 tackles is more than any single player on our team put up last year and almost double what james butler did.

I say go for the guy that fits are weakness better.

    James Butler!

Butler is taller than most of our secondary and he is better in pass coverage. Also he will be much cheaper

The only reason Butler would be better than Gibril would be the cost. As far as play on the field Gibril Wilson is far superior to James Butler.
