Happy New Year! Nick's First Mock of 2014, Surprise Pick from Me @ 2nd Overall

Just to see how things played out, I wanted to try what some have suggested and see how the draft shakes out for the Rams if they stay put with the second overall pick and take Jadeveon Clowney. So here's a possible projection in which that occurs.

Obviously those who have been reading my recent posts know this isn't my first preference, but just to keep an open mind, I wanted to mock it out and see how it went. Hopefully it will bring about some unique discussion to a topic that's been very much debated the last couple of days.

As always, constructive criticism is welcome! I neglected to provide the reasoning for picks this time, just because... well, because. If you'd like the reasoning for a specific pick, just let me know.

    Enjoy!

Because the list I was copying and pasting names from denotes all underclassmen with an asterisk, and I must have missed removing that one when making the mock.

Nice mock Nick! You know what's funny, you seem to always come out with Mocks right around a holiday haha. Instead of being like us normal people and being with family and partying with friends, Nick just posts Mock Drafts

Hey, what can I say? I make use of the down time between holiday events. Right now, the wife and baby are visiting a friend out of town. Translation... perfect time for a mock!

Nick I love this mock. The Rams are in a spot to take Clowney BPA at #2... With #13 thru #16 they all address our needs and I would be happy with any one of them...

Like the mock, but what would drafting Clowney mean for Chris Long? He certainly makes too much money to be a back-up or rotational guy.

I think Clowney would be the #3 man in that situation.

But HUb, why would the Rams use the 2nd pick in the entire draft on a #3 DE?

    Exactly.

He'd have to get in shape and play well in preseason to beat out Hayes for the #3 DE spot first.

I'm sure if the Rams were to draft Clowney that would likely mean that 2014 would be Chris Long's last year with the Rams. He'd either be traded for a 2nd or 3rd round pick, or be cut at the end of the season when he'd have no guaranteed money coming at him. I'm not sure how effective it would be on running downs, but a DL of Quinn-Hayes-Long-Clowney on passing downs would be absolutely devastating.

That's what I was thinking but some people here thinks he'd be competing for the 3rd end spot. LOL.... How ridiculous is that?

Getting the most elite talent in the draft and a solid tackle in the first round? Can't say I'd be too upset. And while it might be overkill now to draft another DE, don't forget Quinn's going to get huge money when his current contract is up. Keeping him and Long will prove difficult from a cap perspective. Hayes contract also expires the same year. Granted, that's a couple years away, but maybe the Rams will plan for the future in that regard, provided they themselves see Clowney as a rare, uber elite talent. Obviously it makes this scenario easier when you have another 1st round pick right down the line.

That's a good point. As AV points out above, he wouldn't be the 3rd DE, but rather the 4th DE.

    Good catch, fortu.
