A Historical Examination of the 2nd Overall Pick

I saw something similar to this on another board, and thought it might be an idea appreciated here at the ClanRam. Here is an examination of everyone picked in the second overall spot in the NFL draft over the last 40 years.

Players in italics appeared in a Pro Bowl, players in bold are Hall of Famers.

    • Bo Matthews, RB, Colorado
    • Randy White, DT, Maryland
    • Steve Niehaus, DT, Notre Dame
    • Tony Dorsett, RB, Pittsburgh
    • Art Still, DE, Kentucky
    • Mike Bell, DE, Colorado State
    • Johnny Lam Jones, WR, Texas
    • Lawrence Taylor, LB, North Carolina
    • Johnie Cooks, LB, Mississippi State
    • Eric Dickerson, RB, Southern Methodist
    • Dean Steinkuhler, OT, Nebraska
    • Bill Fralic, G, Pittsburgh
    • Tony Casillas, NT, Oklahoma
    • Cornelius Bennett, LB, Alabama
    • Neil Smith, DE, Nebraska
    • Tony Mandarich, OT, Michigan State
    • Blair Thomas, RB, Penn State
    • Eric Turner, S, UCLA
    • Quentin Coryatt, LB, Texas A&M
    • Rick Mirer, QB, Notre Dame
    • Marshall Faulk, RB, San Diego State
    • Tony Boselli, OT, USC
    • Kevin Hardy, LB, Illinois
    • Darrell Russell, DT, USC
    • Ryan Leaf, QB, Washington State
    • Donovan McNabb, QB, Syracuse
    • LaVarr Arrington, LB, Penn State
    • Leonard Davis, OL, Texas
    • Julius Peppers, DE, North Carolina
    • Charles Rogers, WR, Michigan State
    • Robert Gallery, OT, Iowa
    • Ronnie Brown, RB, Auburn
    • Reggie Bush, RB, USC
    • Calvin Johnson, WR, Georgia Tech
    • Chris Long, DE, Virginia
    • Jason Smith, OT, Baylor
    • Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska
    • Von Miller, LB, Texas A&M
    • Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor
    • Luke Joeckel, OT, Texas A&M

Out of 40 players selected in the last 40 years, 23 of them (57.5%) were Pro Bowl caliber and five (12.5%) became Hall of Famers.

That's pretty impressive. That's probably the highest success rate of any sport's draft.

When it's all said and done, I'd say that 20% or more of that group will be in the HOF with guys like Calvin Johnson, Julius Peppers, maybe Suh eventually, and a potentially a few others. Of course, we proved with Jason Smith that you can completely whiff. Only 7 of the last 20 #2 picks have missed the pro bowl, and we managed to grab two of them. I think we're due for a HOFer.

Nice compilation. A couple of those that weren't Pro Bowl caliber players were still very good pro's.
