I don't get it...OLB a huge need?
I see person after person here suggesting we go after Lance Briggs, draft an OLB high when we have a clear need on the line, etc. I don't get it. Chillar isn't awesome, but he isn't awful either. If we can upgrade, we'd certainly do it...but probably not at the cost of drafting/signing linemen.
I'd say that the front office apparently agrees with me too. Not only is there no discussion of moving Witherspoon out to OLB and drafting an ILB, but they haven't really pursued any of the better FA linebackers out there.
I'll go so far as to say that LB is our fourth biggest need after DE, DT, and interior linemen.
In any case, its worth discussing.
Re: I don't get it...OLB a huge need?
Why not Porter of the Steelers??? The guy can play spot DE and he's a great linebacker in my opinion.
Re: I don't get it...OLB a huge need?
Porter cant cover. I dont need to say anymore.
Im fine with Chillar if we use all our money to sign or draft DL. However, if we can grab some decent linemen AND upgrade the OLB spot, then why shouldnt we?
Re: I don't get it...OLB a huge need?
Chillar is like you said not awesome, but he's also not good. He's slow, looks out of place and can't shed blockers.
There is a definate need at SAM.

We already have 2 other LBs that are good in coverage. We would use Porter more for his pass rushing abilities. Imagine Little coming from one side, and Porter coming from the other. That would be pretty scary IMO.
Re: I don't get it...OLB a huge need?
How is Pisa's arm? Coakley just got released. Chillar isn't an every down LB. Yep, we need help at OLB.
Re: I don't get it...OLB a huge need?
Just heard that Porter was reportedly signed by the Dolphins.

Pisa and Spoon are better in coverage but are still more then adequete against the run. Porter's coverage skills are quite lacking. But anyway, its a mute point because he has signed with the dolphins.
Also, the Little and Porter pass rush combo would be great in a 3-4, but in the 4-3 the Rams will run the pass rush will come more from the front four. Having Porter in just as a situational pass rusher would cost too much IMO, and a situational pass rusher is all he could be for the Rams.

Pisa could play with every bone in his body broken, dont worry about him
Re: I don't get it...OLB a huge need?
lets sign donnie edwards and get over the damn thing... edwards would be a great pick for us
Re: I don't get it...OLB a huge need?
He is a small inside linebacker in a 4-3 system

Coakley was a depth player and you're talking about Chillar being used in a rotation. I wouldn't classify a rotation/depth linebacker as a top need for this team and I certainly wouldn't use my first round pick on it when there are quality DTs and DE on the board. I'll throw my TV out the window if we draft a LB and pass on someone like Adam Carricker.
Now, if we could get someone that was a tremendous improvement at the position, I'd be OK with it. But there isn't anyone that is so good in FA or in the draft that we ought to overlook any of the other three positions I named (except maybe OG) in the first round. And, depending on who is available, the second round too.
Re: I don't get it...OLB a huge need?
SLB ranks as my third team need for the Rams right now behind NT and DE. Is it a huge need? I don't think so. But I don't think it's such an area of strength where we shouldn't consider an upgrade if we find ourselves in a position to take a player there.
Re: I don't get it...OLB a huge need?
I think Witherspoon is a tremendous talent, but he's a bit on the small side to be playing inside. He gets pushed around too much in the run game. His speed and tackling ability would be better served on the strong side. If we can't get one of the top D-linemen than maybe we trade down a few spots for Willis and gain another pick or two.

This is more or less my point, except I go the extra step to point out that there aren't a whole lot of options here.
