I officially hate the Pro Day workouts system!
What's worse than trying to gauge a player's potential based upon a 40 time?
Answer: trying to gauge a player's potential based upon an INVALID 40 time.
How many players, particularly at the WR position, have "improved" their 40 time from the Combine to their Pro Day workout by .05 or more? Kendall Wright, Reuben Randle, Mohamed Sanu, Nick Toon...
Did they all get faster? I doubt it.
Clearly, there is a home-field advantage involved here.
Run on the right surface... deduct .03 seconds.
Make sure the wind is at your back... deduct .03 seconds.
Set up the timekeeping system in a favorable manner... deduct .04 seconds.
Make sure you have "observers" with Twitter accounts posting "reports" of the 40 time... deduct .15 seconds!
The only way to have a useful measure of 40 times is to have the prospects all run in one place, on one day, on the same surface, and with the same timekeepers.
Hey... we already have a system for that! Its called the Combine!
If NFL teams want useful information, they need to make it clear to the players (or, more importantly, the agents) that they aren't buying these Pro Day 40 times.
If the teams could persuade players to either run at the Combine or (for those who sit out due to injuries) at a "make-up session" in Indianapolis in the weeks before the draft, they would have data that could at least be measured on an "apple to apple" basis.
As it is, the whole thing is a farce.
Maybe we should just rely on the game films.Last edited by AvengerRam; -03-28-2012 at 12:48 PM.

Re: I officially hate the Pro Day workouts system!
and of course everyone knows that straight-lining running at full sprint for 40 yards and 40 yards only without pads or defenders or the need to look over your shoulder for the ball in ideal conditions is the sole way to determine if a player is fast enough to get downfield...
I hate 40 times. They have some usefulness for WRs...some. Why on earth do tackles and guards run them? I agree, it's all a farce. Use game films, when the guys are actually playing the game with pads and defenders.

That's just crazy! How can you seriously recommend that?!?!

University of Colorado WR Don Dahill reprortedly ran a 40 yard dash in 3.84 seconds. It was later revealed that he ran his 40 at the University Annex in Aspen down the black slope of Mount Sheetdatsteep. Scouts have adjusted the time accordingly, and now view Dahill as a Day 1-3 prospect.

Re: I officially hate the Pro Day workouts system!
Well the truth of the matter is that Sheetdatsteep is actually a very poor track and probably slowed him down. Just imagine what he could do on turf. Not to mention his physical skills are off the charts. With our needs at WR we can't sit around and hope he dropes, #39 is a logical choice, if not 33.

I'm just saying the Rams cannot afford to use a high pick on someone who will wet himself a little every time he sees a snow cone in the stands. Besides, did you see the photo? His "hand" writing is awful and shaky. We don't need a receiver with questionable hands. And despite his blistering downhill, er 40, time he was run down by an overweight campus security officer.

And what about that whole domestic violins issue?

Re: I officially hate the Pro Day workouts system!
I just don't see how buying american made violins is a character flaw on the part of Dahill. Yes, european or russian made violins offer a slightly better sound that may help keep locker room unity, but I also think his teammates will appreciate the way he is supporting american jobs and the economy by buying his violins domestically instead of abroad. I just see this as a non-issue.

So he won't buy things from abroad? Sexist pig.
(Sound it out if you don't get it.
