And, of course, part of the reason the offense only scored 10 points a game was because the defense couldn't stay off the field. As you said, it goes both ways.

And I would also bet that if we had a productive defense, our offense owuld suddenly get better, even without any major upgrades or addition.

Our defense was fairly productive. But, if they're kept on the field all day, they start wearing out, and they start slipping, and they start giving up points and big plays.
You can't say that for the offense. Even if our defense stops the opposing offenses, our offense has no weapons, no consistent means, no resources to score points. Hence the average of 10 points per game, which is pathetic.
A good offense keeps a defense fresh and healthy, which results in better defensive play.
A good defense keeps an offense fresh and healthy, but that doesn't really matter when we always go 3 and out. Our offense could have all the time in the world, and still not be able to score points.

For practical purposes, you can't say it about the defense either. Yes, the 4th quarter was the hardest on the scoreboard. With 8.7 points allowed per 4th quarter, the last frame was the worst. But the problem is.......the game was already over.
The Rams allowed per quarter last year:
1st - 5.4 points
2nd - 7.1 points
3rd - 5.8 points
4th - 8.7 points
Before the 4th quarter, the defense had already allowed more points (18.3) than the offense mustered in a whole game (10). So were they wearing down in the 4th? Yes, they were. Did it really matter? No, because the game was typically already over.
What's truly depressing is that by HALFTIME, the defense had allowed more points than the offense put up the whole game.
Giving it up in the 1st half is not wearing down, it's just being not good. Know what I mean?
Bottomline: Both sides need major upgrades. It's just a matter of which prospect will help the most."Before the gates of excellence the high gods have placed sweat; long is the road thereto and rough and steep at first; but when the heights are reached, then there is ease, though grievously hard in the winning." --- Hesiod
