Quinn is going to be in the $13-16 million range when he comes up for renegotiation. You don't draft a guy knowing you are going to have to start getting rid of other quality players at that position. You can't keep Quinn, Long and Clowney over the long term unless Clowney is a complete bust - then you don't want him.

Three top tier DEs in three to four years would be $35 million or so against the cap. No way they put that much money into a single position, especially with a QB who is already eating up a huge chunk of that.

Snead understands the salary cap. The only way he's willing to take Clowney is if he doesn't believe Chris Long is worth his current contract. For a team as young as this, I guarantee you they are considering cap considerations down the road. You want to keep the nucleus of this team together as long as you can.

Quinn is signed through 2014, and the Rams have a club option for 2015. That means they have two seasons in which they are not obligated to sign him to a long-term extension (they may decide to do so early, but that would be a choice). If necessary, the Rams could also franchise Quinn for the 2016 season, and Chris Long is signed through that year.

So, from a contractual standpoint, the Rams can maintain their current starting DEs for the next three seasons without having to sign any additional long-term contracts.
Just handed out my first rep in ten years! Great answer!

Oh man! Rambos I really respect you here on this site allot... Butt that is too harsh you got to cut some guys some slack. Hopefully you will get kinder in your dottage and soften your heart a bit more... But still keep your critical eye to the frontline and what is important and valid. You can be a guide on the road to enlighenment or a stumbling block we all get to make these choices my friend.

    Don't worry about it.

    Like Clowney, I'm definitely overhyped.

I continue to assert I don't see the value of it - you are looking at 2016 with Quinn franchised and making $11 million, Long still likely a force at 31 and ending his restructure, and looking at resigning Clowney in 1-2 years. I very much doubt you end up with all three of them at that time. Long is the odd man out - and I expect him to still be playing at a high level at that time.

You pick Barr or Matthews, you don't have that issue. Its just yet another reason not to draft Clowney.

Sorry, I now return you guys to your mutual love fest.

Its not the field but the night life that he was doing it for my friend.

Looks like Barr has his share of haters as well:

ESPN's Louis Riddick noted UCLA senior OLB Anthony Barr did not reach his expectations after watching the edge rusher's tape.

"Draft valuation is about defining a player's short/long term developmental potential and role, and setting a minimum level of expectations," Riddick tweeted. "That being said, what I expected to see from A. Barr has not met the reality of what I have seen over the past 24hours of watching him." Our own Josh Norris is in agreement, as he has ranked Barr closer to the No. 10 prospect in recent months rather than his common placement in the top five.

Re: Impact defender at #2? I'd consider Anthony Barr over Jadeveon Clowney

    And it continues

Scouts Inc.'s Todd McShay called UCLA edge rusher Anthony Barr's game against Arizona "a little disturbing."

Our own Josh Norris has ranked Khalil Mack over Anthony Barr for some time, and expect the national evaluation to move that way the closer we get to the draft. Barr will put up great numbers at the Combine, but he is not as far along in his development as given credit for. He still wins with great speed off the edge, but it is apparent that Barr has only spent two seasons on the defensive side of the ball.
Basically what I'm trying to say is it would be foolish to consider Barr over Clowney at #2, but you're entitled to your opinion.

Because of a couple of comments by commentators?

You act as though Clowney has no detractors. He, in fact, has several.

The bottom line is that I don't want the Rams to draft either at the top of the draft, but if the Rams were going to go for a guy because of pass rushing abilities, I'd rather he be an OLB than a DE.
