Impact of delayed FA on Rams' (and their rivals') draft plans.

Though nobody knows how things will play out, there is a reasonable chance that FA won't occur before the draft.

How would this impact the Rams and their division rivals?

Here are a few ways that come to mind:

    1. Greater pressure on Rams to take a WR early in draft.
If the Rams don't have the opportunity to sign a WR before the draft (even their own FA, Mark Clayton), they almost certainly will have to take a WR in the first two rounds. If its the right guy at the right spot, fine (i.e. Julio Jones in Round 1, Leonard Hankerson or Torry Smith in Round 2). Hopefully, they won't have to reach to fill this need.

    2. Impact on O.J. Atogwe situation.
Whether by allowing him to collect his roster bonus, or quicky (before March 1) renegotiating, the Rams would need to secure Atogwe's services. There are enough needs without adding FS to the list.

    3. Rivals Scramble for QBs.
If FA were to start on time, I could see the Niners, Cardinals and Seahawks all making runs at veteran QBs (Carson Palmer, Keven Kolb, Marc Bulger, etc.). If, on the other hand, they don't have that opportunity, can they afford to pass on the chance to draft a QB in Round 1 (and will the QBs available to them be worth the pick?)

This is a great point, and it's league-wide when you think about it. Without the benefit of free agency before the draft, we'll likely see teams drafting more based on need than they normally would. That could result in some more reaches than normal, which could benefit those teams who stay true to their board.

There is another aspect to this matter and that's the value of FA's post draft. If a team has already drafted a player at a position of need, what is their willingness to pay for a high-priced FA. None or very little likely. That will depress the value of certain players which has a big impact on teams' ability to compete for FA's. I'm not sure how this will impact the Rams because it will of course be an individual matter for each player depending on bidders. On the whole I think it will cause some players to stay put, some players will be franchised anyway so the FA market this year is likely to be smaller and less dynamic if the draft occurs before the FA period begins.

Incidentally, NFL Network reported today that the Vikings are very likely to franchise Sidney Rice taking him off the market and reducing our WR options. They also had a segment on Sam Bradford adjusting to the new OC, JMD. The consensus opinion on the show was he'll be fine ( no growth stunting) because he's a hard worker and will benefit from JMD's creative offensive schemes the way Cassel, Brady and Orton did. The next few months will be most interesting.

    Go Rams!
