I think the selection of Clowney leaves a huge need untouched.
I think there are very real concerns with his mental approach to the game.

Having said all that, I would not have a problem with this draft.

If the Rams select Clowney, then several things must have happened:

    1) He managed to convince Fishead that last year was an anomaly. It was not indicative of his approach to the game.

    2) Jake Long is healing on schedule and/or Saffold re-signed and/or Fishead has a plan in place for the O-line that doesn't require the #2 draft pick.

    3) The Rams' final evaluation of Clowney is higher than any trade package that arose.

With those 3 things in place, I'm okay with the Clowney selection.

"Before the gates of excellence the high gods have placed sweat; long is the road thereto and rough and steep at first; but when the heights are reached, then there is ease, though grievously hard in the winning." --- Hesiod

If he is correct on the first 12 picks, i would be shocked if we passed on Gilbert (or Dennard for that matter) to take Clinton-Dix.

I'm sure they are not taking trades into acct, but I just can't see us sitting at 2 with Clowney there and NOT trading down. Rather get the trade down, pick up Watkins(who I would take at 2 just burned by the Jason Smith fiasco), or if he is gone, Robinson/Matthews, or if they traded way down then Evans or Lewan.

I too would be more keen on getting Gilbert or Dennard. Even though they have been praised in this draft as the top two S I can't help to hear a but in the voices of the people talking about them. Rather get an amazing CB in the draft then an pretty good S even if it is a slightly more need.

I agree with GC. If Justin Gilbert were there at #13 we'd be nuts to pass on him for Clinton-Dix, I don't care what our secondary needs. Gilbert has the size and speed that we seem to want for our CB's. For some reason I'm not wowed by Clinton-Dix, I think as a FS Calvin Pryor has more of what Gregg Williams likes, plus he can blitz the QB, which is a GW staple.

    Go Rams!

I'm actually not wowed by any of the Safeties in this draft, unless they're an Eric Berry or Eric Weddle I wouldn't waste a 1st round pick on one

    Re: Jim Thomas' Mock (03-02)

does he give any rational? For example, have Cleveland picked up a QB in FA, and that's why they go Watkins at 4 over Bridgewater?

I just don't see a team that already has Josh Gordon taking another WR when they have no QB to speak of outside of Brian Hoyer, who is hardly someone you want to pin the franchise on

I would be shocked if we took defensive players with both of our picks in the first round. For some reason Clowney reminds me of that linebacker who was a workout freak (cant think of his name) who ended up being a complete bust. Just a gut feeling, but I don't want the Rams to take Clowney.

That is why when I look at mocks here and other sites that I really enjoy the thought process put in each pick, not just a list of picks. Even if I disagree if I can see the logic behind it, I can appreciate the picks rather than sit and scratch my head saying "whaa....???"

Crazy that many teams considered Curry the safest player in the draft, I had no idea he would flame out the way he did
