    Kelvin Benjamin Entering the Draft

    Friday, January 10, 2014
Kelvin Benjamin leaving FSU for NFL

    ESPN.com news services

Florida State receiver Kelvin Benjamin, who scored the game-winning touchdown in the Vizio BCS National Championship, told ESPN's Joe Schad on Friday that he will enter the NFL draft.

Benjamin, a redshirt sophomore, caught a 2-yard TD pass from Jameis Winston with 13 seconds left in Monday night's 34-31 victory over Auburn. He finished the season with 54 receptions for 1,011 yards and 15 touchdowns. He emerged as a dominant force late in the season after periods of inconsistency and had two touchdown receptions in the ACC title game.

At 6-foot-5 and 234 pounds, Benjamin is a matchup nightmare because of his size and athleticism. His skill set has been compared to that of Calvin Johnson, though Benjamin must develop more consistency in route running and catching of some routine passes.
Benjamin is ranked 29th overall by ESPN's Scouts Inc., giving him a low-first-round grade.
He is the second high-profile member of the Seminoles to leave for the NFL in as many days. On Thursday, defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan -- rated No. 7 -- declared for the draft.

No more young receivers please. I am tired of getting my hopes up on these players for them to crash and burn. The verdict is still out on Quick, Givens, n Co. but not looking as promising as I am sure we all had hoped going into last years offseason.

Givens was a fourth round pick and Quick was an extremely questionable 2nd round pick. There's a huge difference between those guys and projected 1st rounders who've played against college football's top competition.

True, but they still take time to develop, and at this point in time, we need guys to produce NOW. He is still very raw, but as always a huge performance at the combine will either help or hurt his cause as it did for Julio Jones a few years ago.

    Two things....

    1. Everybody needs time to develop, but that doesn't mean they can't produce along the way. Besides, I expect that Givens, Quick, Pettis, Kendricks, Cook, Austin and Bailey will do plenty of producing while Benjamin is developing, should we draft him.

    2. How can a huge performance at the combine hurt his cause?

Sir we've covered the pros vs. cons of drafting a WR in our current position on several different occasions.

He's a big guy with Calvin Johnson potential, but he as flaws as shown in the BCS Title Game. The only guys I'm willing to draft that early at this point are Watkins and Evans. A sophomore player coming into the draft whose faced some weak ACC competition ought to be considered a project (which we already have with Quick)

Can we go back and take Alshon Jeffery as opposed to Quick?
    I believe!

Okay, yes, he's a project. And yes, he has some route and hands issues. But those can be coached. And what can't be coached is the physical traits he brings to the game.

I'm not necessarily advocating for him, but dang......he could be exciting.

If the Rams haven't been able to "coach" Brian Quick, what makes you think they'll be able to with Kelvin Benjamin? The Rams don't need another project WR, they need someone who's going to be able to step right in and perform.

I'm not saying the Rams can or can't. But the answer to your question is pretty simple.....they are two different individuals. You can't look at one player and project to a different player.

Quick isn't done. Snead on the radio made an excellent point about Quick, compare him to Vincent Jackson.

VJ after 2 years had 30 catches and 512 yards and 6 TDs.
Quick after 2 years has 29 catches for 458 yards and 4 TDs.

And I'd imagine there would, at the very least, be a slight increase to Quick's stats had Bradford not been injured for most of the season.
