To the "let's draft a QB in the first round to replace Sam" group...

    Brandon Weedon
    Blaine Gabbert
    Christian Ponder
    Tim Tebow
    Mark Sanchez
    Josh Freeman
    Jamarcus Russell
    Brady Quinn

All taken in the first round (2007-2012) to be "the guy." All (with the exception of Gabbert, who's time is coming soon) have been handed the job and then demoted, traded or cut.

Just a friendly reminder that the grass is most definitely not always greener...

I understand where you are coming from on this, but it's a little different situation with us. I compare our situation to that of the Colts when they drafted Luck. Manning was coming off an injury and they had a decision to make. Had there not been a QB that was as good a prospect as Luck, I doubt they would have taken someone else and let Manning go.

In that type of situation, you have to have a "can't miss" type of prospect or you are screwed. I certainly wouldn't be against us drafting a QB to replace Bradford immediately, but he would have to be that type of player. Not sure there is one in this draft. Bridgewater might be close, but not sure he is on Luck's level.

Basically all the QB's you mentioned were taken by teams that had no QB and were desperate or had an aging veteran that was on the decline. A lot of those guys were reaches with a lot of question marks. Those teams didn't have a #1 pick in the prime of his football career to make a decision about. Bottom Line: Unless a "Luck" is on the board, we keep going with Sam and draft in the later rounds for a back up to groom.

You're not disproving my point, though. For every first round success, there is more than one failure.

As we know, where you are drafted does not necessarily translate into stardom. I think we need to have a bona fide backup that can step in and keep team moving ahead. How would we get that as a team regarding the QB position? IMO Sam is our QB for sure next year BUT I would like to still have more then just hope should he go down. Does that mean we draft lower and develop AND sign an FA that can step in if needed? That might be the best way to go. And a revised Sam 2014 contract to give the Rams some cap space as well to sign that FA.

Right now, when I look at the options, I hope that:

    1. The Rams restructure Sam's contract to allow for cap space to pursue FAs; and

    2. The Rams draft a QB on Day 2 of the draft (the guy I'd target is Tajh Boyd) who can offer the potential of a better contingency plan than (sorry, Kel) we have now.

Yes, that sounds like a great plan to me. Check out the guy at Oregon St. He is from my area and leads the NATION in passing. Nice kid too!!

I wonder how many people who complain every year that the Rams don't draft well are now demanding they draft a new QB.

I'd rather invest in two linemen and draft someone like Boyd or Carr in the 2nd to mid rounds.

As long as we stay away from Johnny Manziel, despite his great stats seems like he might be a headache in the locker room. Hey, let's see what Austin Davis can give us before we put out the "help wanted" sign.

    Go Rams!

Re: To the "let's draft a QB in the first round to replace Sam" group...

I would like for the Rams to be either 100% committed to Bradford or completely move on and draft a 1st round QB. If Bradford's knee is looking good around draft time and if he is willing to restructure his contract, then I wouldn't want to waste a 2nd round pick on a QB. I would prefer that the team draft a player in the 1st round when it comes to the most important position on the football field due to the overall higher success rate of 1st round picks. Most teams pretty much concede that their playoff and Super Bowl hopes go down the drain if their starting QB gets hurt (teams like the ***** and Patriots are rare exceptions to this) and I would prefer to go all in with 1 QB than go in half heartedly with 2.

I agree, but the guy we should target is Murray from Georgia or the QB from LSU.

I'd like nothing more than for Austin to shine as it would save us a draft pick, but the fact that he couldn't win the back-up job this summer does not depict that he will be the answer at the back-up QB position...but who knows.
