Re: *LIVE* ClanRam Moderator Mock Draft!

With the 14th pick in the ClanRam Moderator Mock Draft, the Denver Broncos (from Atlanta) select....

Santonio Holmes, WR, The Ohio State University
    5'11" 188lbs

In contrast to my friend Nick, Denver scores the best receiver in the draft. Holmes is a prototype to another Ohio State grad, Cris Carter; making him head and shoulders above the competition. Denver receiving corp has been very lackluster over the last few years getting only average play from an over-rated Lelie. Holmes will add the homerun threat that Smith once possessed. With the lack of depth and the ageless Smith getting passed his prime, Holmes will provide that immediate spark the Broncos need.

With the 16th pick in the ClanRam Moderator Mock Draft, the Miami Dolphins select...

    Tye Hill, CB, Clemson
    5'9" 185 lbs.

This offseason, the Dolphins lost three of their four starters in the secondary [CB S. Madison, S T. Jones, S L. Schulters], as well as their nickel cornerback. In desperate need for a defensive back, Nick Saban can't pass up a top-notch cover corner like Hill despite having no legitimate starters at safety.

    With the 17th...ahh heck.

    Minnesota Vikings select

DeAngelo Williams - RB - University of Memphis
    5"10 217

Led the nation in rushing yards with 1,964 yards and is also a multi-purpose threat as DeAngelo is dangerous in the flat. Totaled 7,573 all purpose yards in his 4 year career at Memphis to become the all time D I leader surpassing Ricky Williams of Texas.

With Onterrio Smith a non factor, DeAngelo could start immediately with the Vikings.

    With the 18th pick...

    The Dallas Cowboys select...

    Manny Lawson, OLB/DE, NC State

    6'5, 245 lbs.

Lawson is one of the top prospects for a 3-4 defense. With Lawson on one side and DeMarcus Ware on the other, the Cowboys will have a pair of excellent edge rushers who will keep opposing OTs on their toes for several years.

With the 19th pick, the San Diego Chargers select...

    Antonio Cromartie, CB, Florida St.
    6'2", 208, Junior

What the Chargers really need is a top tier receiver, but with Jackson and Holmes off the board, there isn't much value at this pick in the receiving corp. So instead the Chargers flip the script and take a top corner. Cromartie is the ultimate high risk / high reward pick in this draft. He may have more raw talent than ANY prospect in the draft, but he has very little experience. He will have to refine his technique and pray that his knee is 100%. If so, the Chargers could have the next great shut-down corner.

However, you know how "if" can go.

With the 20th pick in the 2006 NFL ClanRam Mod Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs select....

    Mathias Kiwanuka, DE, Boston College
    6'5" - 256 pounds - Senior

The Chiefs really would have loved to see one of the top receivers or top cornerbacks available here, but sadly they were gobbled up quicker than expected. That said, Kansas City could use an additional pass rusher on their defensive line, so Kiwanuka makes a lot of sense. Jared Allen has emerged as a sack artist the last two seasons, but on the other side, the aging Erick Hicks just hasn't been as impressive. Kiwanuka could start as a situational rusher and work his way into the starting line-up.

With the 21st pick in the 2006 NFL ClanRam Mod Draft, the New England Patriots select....

    Ernie Sims
    5'11", 231lbs, LB, Florida State

For the first time in a long time New England has some serious holes to fill in their team. With the first flight receivers picked over and their number one target taken (DeAngleo Williams) off the board, the Pats to turn to the defense. Some how Sims drops into the their laps with the 21st pick. Again, New England hits a home run.

With the 22nd pick in the ClanRam Moderator draft, the Denver Broncos select...

    Tamba Hali, DE, Penn St.
    6'3" 275 lbs.

Having two picks in the first round gives the Broncos a lot of flexibility with this choice. Trevor Pryce is gone, and Denver showed they want a big upgrade at the DE spot by going after John Abraham, but Abraham wanted to be with the Falcons all along. The addition of Tamba Hali gives them a good all-around end with a non-stop motor, completing a very solid D-line rotation [and at a cheaper cost than J.A.].

Tampa Bay has the next pick and they will take

    Sinorice Moss....WR.....The U

    5'10...185

Tampa needs a deep threat and Moss provides that. Forget about the size of the player, this guy can fly and when he's open is a threat to take it to the house every time.

With the 24th selection in the ClanRam Moderator Draft, the Cincinnati Bengals select:

    Donte Whitner, S, Ohio State

    5'11, 202 lbs.

Surprised? Don't be. The Bengals need a playmaker at the safety position, and Whitner could be a "poor man's" Troy Polamalu. He can hit, and ran a 4.37 40 at his pro day. Plus, the Ohio faithful won't mind this local product staying in the State.

With the 25th pick in the draft, the New York Giants select...

Chad Greenway, 6'3", 242, OLB, Senior, Iowa

The Giants found out the hard way last year how little depth they had at their LB position. This year they have Pierce in the middle and Griesen will compete with Torbor for the SOLB spot. So a versatile player like Greenway will do nicely as the starting Will or 4th LB until he earns a full-time spot. He's a hard worker and a team leader. He's the all-out work-ethic type that really churns Coughlin butter so I see him doing well in the Big Apple.

With the 26th selection in the ClanRam Moderator Draft, the Chicago Bears select:

    Leonard Pope, TE, Georgia
    6'7" - 258 pounds - Junior

There is some pretty decent depth at both cornerback and tight end, but the Bears have a chance to get the second best tight end in this draft and should take it. Pope will offer the Bears a lot as a receiving option, especially in the red zone. He should also be able to develop into a good blocker, which will help Chicago's running game. Pope makes too much sense for the Bears to pass up at this point.

With the 27th selection in the ClanRam Moderator Draft, the Carolina Panthers select:

    MARCEDES LEWIS--UCLA
    6'7" 261lbs

Currently on the roster are Kris Mangum, Mike Seidman and Michael Gaines, hardly names that are a threat to any defense. Lewis will now give the Panthers a three headed monster in the redzone. Smith, Foster and Lewis. This team serious needs a player that can stretch the field as much as Smith does and with little options at this point at the receiver position, the Panthers will take advantage of the deep draft at the tight-end position. Lewis' superb height and pass catching abilities will make an immediate impact to the Kitty Cat offense.

With the 28th pick in the ClanRam Moderator Draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars select...

    DeMeco Ryans, OLB, Alabama
    6'1" 236 lbs.

After taking an offensive player in the first round for the last three years, the Jags turn to the other side of the ball. Tight end is another need, but with the top three gone already, Jack Del Rio [a former linebacker himself] gets to choose between a few good OLB prospects to fill in for the departed strongside linebacker Akin Ayodele. With Ryans' superb instincts, smarts, and sure tackling, he'll be able to pick up the system right away and make an immediate impact.

    The Jets take....

    Nick Mangold...C...The Ohio State University
    6'3 5/8 300lbs

The Jets need to start all over on the O line, so why not take the best C in the draft? Mangold has all the tools to become a very good C in the NFL and started every game at OSU since his sophmore season. Needs to work on his lower body strength but that's about the only negative with Mangold.
