Mayock calls taking QB #1 a 'big reach'
He's basically enforcing what I've thought all along. Unless we trade down, there is no way I can see it being justified if we select a QB with the first overall pick.Mike Mayock: Ndamukong Suh and Gerald McCoy are, by far, the two best players

ALLEN PARK -- Mike Mayock, the highly regarded draft analyst from the NFL Network, had a conference call today with the media and he made it clear that he believes defensive tackles Ndamukong Suh (Nebraska) and Gerald McCoy (Oklahoma) are the two best players available in the draft.
The Detroit Lions have the second overall pick in the draft and are likely to end up with either Suh and McCoy. Mayock said he believes the two players have different skills but are equally as valuable.
Mayock said Suh reminds him of a Kevin Williams (Minnesota Vikings) but might be even better. Mayock believes Suh is a little stronger in the run game while McCoy is a better pass rusher. However, the differences are small and both players offer the complete package.
I asked Mayock if there's any chance that a quarterback could move into that first overall pick and he said it was highly doubtful.
"I think it's a big reach,'' Mayock said. "The logical guy is (Oklahoma's Sam) Bradford. I'm not a big (Jimmy) Clausen fan. No way in the world in my mind -that's today, I've still got a lot more work to do on Bradford. Those two players (Suh and McCoy) just dwarf the quarterback issue.''

I wonder what it is about Clausen that he's sour on?

Very interesting, to say the least.

He's right we can't take a chance on a QB with a guy like Suh in this draft.

Kiper= Idiot
McShay= Even Bigger Idiot
Mayock= Not an idiot
Mayock one of the better guys at breaking down tape and evaluating talent IMO. At this point it is still really early, but if there is anyone on t.v's opinion I would trust its Mayock.

Re: Mayock calls taking QB #1 a 'big reach'
N. Suh: 12 Sacks
G. McCoy: 6 Sacks
What am I missing? I'm not saying I know more than Mayock, but is there any particular reason Suh has double the sacks of McCoy and yet McCoy is a better pass rusher?

I would have to agree with his sentiments. With the #1 pick, you need to pick BPA unless you have the position already filled with a long time starter. We don't have a long term solution at DT, so Suh has to be the pick.

I agree with Mayock: as footballsfuture.com said, "Finding an answer at QB is needed, but reaching for one at this spot could set the team back another five years. Taking Suh and adding him to the other talent on the defensive line could help take the defense up a notch."

Re: Mayock calls taking QB #1 a 'big reach'
I thought I posted this last night..but apparently I didn't. I think the reason Mayock said what he said was that Suh simply dominated people with his power in college. He won't be able to do that in the pros. He certainly has the potential and ability to further develop that skill set, but right now, McCoys pass rush skills are further developed as it related to transitioning into the NFL

Re: Mayock calls taking QB #1 a 'big reach'
If you've watched him play you'd know that isn't true. I've seen him use inside and outside moves, and a wicked spin move. He also uses his hands better than any college DT I've ever seen.
I think maybe you just want the Rams to pass on him so he'l fall to the Lions.
Welcome to the St. Louis Rams!

Re: Mayock calls taking QB #1 a 'big reach'
I agree Suh and I think D.Alexander in round 2.
He is going to be flying up draft boards and we should not let him get by there.
The more I think about it he may be a 1st rounder. The only good thing for us is that a lot of teams went WR round 1 last season and may not want to do this again late in round 1.
