Mike Mayock: “I’d Take Khalil Mack Over Jadeveon Clowney”

Mike Mayock: “I’d Take Khalil Mack Over Jadeveon Clowney”
Published February 19, 2014 | By Shane Richardson

In an interview with Adam Schein on Mad Dog Sports, reputed NFL draft analyst Mike Mayock said he would draft Khalil Mack out of the University of Buffalo over highly touted Jadeveon Clowney out of the University of South Carolina. Schein asked Mayock if he had concerns about the motor or character of Clowney:

"Yeah, I do. I would start off by saying that physically, as an athletic specimen, he’s as good as there has ever been at that position. You look at Mario Williams, I think this kid has more upside than Mario did coming out. However…my concern is the work ethic, how much of your resources are you going to have to expend to make sure the kid is where he needs to be when he needs to be there and ultimately, do you trust him? Is he going to be an accountable teammate? And if I am sitting there with a choice between him and Khalil Mack, I’m probably going Khalil Mack…my Khalil Mack grade is just about the same as Clowney. So if I look at the two of them and say I trust one and I am not sure about the other…then yeah…Mack to me, I love that kid, and just because he played in Buffalo, I’m banging the tables for him."
Mayock was then asked to give the listeners some detail on why he was so high on Mack:

"The first tape I put in was Ohio State, and this kid dominated Ohio State like nobody I’ve ever seen. He’s explosive off the edge, he’s 6’3″ 248 pounds, and in today’s NFL, explosion off the edge is a primary characteristic that you need, so that’s number one. Number two, he’s stout against the run. Number three, he hustles. Number four, he’s got a little aggressive chip on his shoulder…I’ve seen him read a quarterback’s eyes, drop back into coverage, and make a one handed interception."

Clowney is widely speculated to be the top pick in the draft so Mayock’s evaluation goes against the main stream thinking when it comes to the star defensive end. His coach at South Carolina certainly did not give him a ringing endorsement when asked about what he thought about Clowney. On ESPN’s “Scouts Inc.’s Top 32 for 2014,” Clowney is rated #1 with an overall grade of 96 while Mack is graded out at #5 with an overall graded of 94.

This is why I love Mike Mayock. He always keeps things interesting -- and manages to back it up with valid insight -- around draft time.

Interested to see whom he projects to where after the combine.

Any Rams fans willing to stick their hands up and say they'd do the same? I'm not sure at this point. I need to watch more tap...AHEM... youtube highlights on both.

Ian Rapoport on NFL Network Rams are doing due diligence on Clowney and have “descended on Rock Hill, SC.” and have done their "due diligence" on South Carolina DE Jadeveon Clowney.

I would not mind taking Khalil Mack either. I think the addition of Gregg Williams makes it more realistic and possible. Williams loves to blitz LB's and Mack is an all around 3 down LB.

Thanks for Sharing the article Nick, I really admire Mike Mayock as some have stated he backs up his evaluations and is not afraid to be critical. The fact that this chimes true to me even before I read it is just icing on the cake. Wonder where Mike has Barr rated? Maybe at 5 or 6 and a 93 or something. Did not see much of Mack but liked what I saw, and as has been pointed out the Greg Williams factor makes it very possiable that we take Mack or Barr.

Sorry, but Mack is not gonna be a Ram.

I hope all the 3-4 OLB types, like Barr, Mack, Ealy, go early, because the Rams would get a better player at a need spot then.

Mosely would make more sense than Mack, who I see going to Tampa Bay at pick 5, or Oakland at 4.

I'm not against taking an OLB with our first pick like some people, but I'd only do it if we traded down and Clowney, Matthews, and Robinson we're all gone

Re: Mike Mayock: “I’d Take Khalil Mack Over Jadeveon Clowney”

I love Mayock, he's informative and controversial, but best of all he's entertaining which is what he's paid to do. My guess is if Mike were a GM he would be not so quick to pull the trigger on Mack with Clowney on the board.

Barry, I agree with you about Mosely. If we trade down and pass on an OT due to Saffold staying with the Rams, I would love to have Mosely. Williams would be able to work wonders with him and he's a back-up if JLau ever gets hurt, plus the eventual successor to him too. I know many of the folks here will disagree with me, but I would be thrilled if we got CJ. We would have to take him before the Giants because he'll never get past them.

    Go Rams!

Like Mack a lot, but certainly not over Clowney.

Re: Mike Mayock: “I’d Take Khalil Mack Over Jadeveon Clowney”

Like when we had to make a decision between Long and Gholston, I will always take someone with a pedigree and a known strong work ethic over a phenominal workout wonder. NFL players are all talented(especially those worthy of a 1st round grade), but the ones who have that chip, have that drive to be better than everyone else are those who become stars.

I'd go Mack and Barr over Clowney as they could possibly fill the Sam spot and we could maybe set up some hybrid fronts if we had them. Clowney doesn't fill anything but an already strong position.
    I believe!

Re: Mike Mayock: “I’d Take Khalil Mack Over Jadeveon Clowney”

I think we should really draft Clowney. Idk defense over offense for me. With fisher as a coach, and with our D- Lineman surrounding this man like the Tenacity of William Hayes, i think he can be influenced well and can blossom, plus we need more rotation on our line this could bring that. But the red flags about him are a good point does he have the will to be the best. Although the same could be said about Alshon Jeffery, they questioned his work ethic. Now alshon is saying; Look at me now!

Re: Mike Mayock: “I’d Take Khalil Mack Over Jadeveon Clowney”

If we're debating whether to pick Clowney or not -- and that is a real dilemma -- then Mack falls off the Rams probability papers. I suppose too many things would have to come to fruition in order to see KM in our vicinity. Of course, Mack is still a 1st rounder.

Main argument here, IMO, is that we have other interests of higher demand. But I agree that our new DC would really like to add Khalil Mack.

Below, Williams insisting with a, "Why can't we have both Clowney AND Mack!?!"

I agree with Mayock..Im not a big fan of him announcing games but his draft analysis is usually pretty solid
