Miller may return at right tackle for Rams

Miller may return at right tackle for Rams
By Jim Thomas
Of the Post-Dispatch
Thursday, Feb. 24 2005

INDIANAPOLIS - Could Fred Miller be headed for a return engagement in St.
Louis? The Rams have had conversations with Miller's agent, St. Louis-based
Harold Lewis, about signing the veteran right tackle. Miller was released
Tuesday by Tennessee, but there are several potential suitors at the moment.

"It'd be fantastic if Freddie could be reunited with the Rams," Lewis said
Thursday. "He would love for it to happen."

A fifth-round draft pick by the Rams in 1996 out of Baylor, Miller played his
first four seasons for St. Louis. He was the team's starting left guard in
1998, and in 1999 he started all 19 games at right tackle on the Rams' Super
Bowl championship squad.

Less than a month after that Super Bowl victory against Tennessee, Miller
signed a six-year, $24 million free agent contract with the Titans. Included in
the deal was a $4.5 million signing bonus. Miller started every game for five
seasons with Tennessee, but with the Titans $27 million over the salary-cap
limit, Miller was among several veterans released. He was scheduled to count
more than $9 million against the cap in 2005.

The Rams have gone through a succession of right tackles since Miller's
departure, with Ryan Tucker, John St. Clair, Kyle Turley and Grant Williams
serving as the primary starters in the past five seasons. Turley is not
expected back next season, so the Rams have a glaring hole at the position.

Of course, price could have a lot to do with where Miller lands. Besides the
Rams, Chicago, New Orleans, Carolina and both New York teams have expressed
interest in Miller.

Lewis was scheduled to arrive in Indianapolis late Thursday night and will meet
with suitors today.

Anyone Remember in 99 (of course you remember) when he had something like 5 false starts against the Titans then it was found out that Tennessee was piping in crowd noise (Vermeil was pissed about that and it's against NFL rules.) then in the Superbowl he shut that same team down? More specifically "The Freak"

Folks, there's something to be said for durability.

Indeed, but if I'm the Rams, I'd still be concerned with his ankle problems from 2004.

The ankle problem and his age may concern me a little bit, but I wouldn't mind seeing him back with the Rams.

Is this a rumor? or is this what the FO thinks at the moment? I don't remember hearing anything definite about Turley.

I don't think there's anything "official" yet. Everyone is just reading the MENE MENE TEKEL UPHARSIN on the wall. He's 50 lbs too light, and has all the public problems with Martz. Nothing's official, but it's hard to see him coming back.
