In this mock the Rams get both Matthews and Clowney

Here is how this could happen.

Reading Nick Wagoner NFC blog he wrote why Atlanta may not be willing to move up, but may want to trade down.

Why Atlanta doesn't make sense: There was probably no team in the NFL racked by injury more than the Falcons in 2013. Atlanta was a preseason Super Bowl favorite and fell to a disappointing 4-12 season. While the Falcons still have plenty of talent in place, the injuries exposed a lack of depth which kept Atlanta from at least reaching the level of mediocrity.

Given that lack of depth, the Falcons might not be inclined to give up extra picks to make a move with the knowledge that they need to add more players to the roster. It might even spur Dimitroff to be more interested in a move down than a move up.
With the relationship we have with the Falcons lets say the draft played out like this and the Rams had a deal in principal only if both Matthews and Robinson are on the board after the Browns pick at four. This would guarantee we would get a top OT.

    Draft unfolds like this:

    1) Houston Texans: Teddy Bridgewater, QB, Louisville

    2) St. Louis Rams: Jadeveon Clowney, DE, South Carolina

    3) Jacksonville Jaguars: Blake Bortles, QB, Central Florida

    4) Cleveland Browns: Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M

    5) Oakland Raiders: Sammy Watkins, WR, Clemson

    6) St. Louis Rams: Jake Matthews, OT, Texas A&M

If the Rams could not trade out and had to make the pick, this would work. But only if they told Atlanta if you donít move up we are taking him. If you want more picks lets work a deal. If we take Matthews at two, Atlanta would not pass on Clowney at six if he where to fall that far.

So what are you thinking that we'd give up for the #6 pick?

450 Points, I'd say our second should do it. But if they wanted a sweetener... we could give them a late round pick as well. We might get an extra one this year will all the free agents we lost.

The Rams could add a CB,LB or G in the third... I like adding Gabe Jackson, OG, Mississippi would be a sold addition to the O line.

So you're suggesting that the Rams would give up their 2nd round pick to move from #13 to #6 so they could draft Clowney and Matthews...

    I don't like it.

Top 50 selections are generally expected to be starters. The Rams would be giving up the chance to select 3 starters in exchange for two picks that would yield a rotation player (Clowney) and a starter (Matthews).

If the Rams were sufficiently enamoured with Clowney to take him at #2, I'd rather they just stay at #13 (where players like Taylor Lewan or Cyrus Kouandjio could be options if OT is the priority) and obtain another starter at #44.

The 6th sixth not the 16th. And no the Rams would have to be sufficiently enamored with Matthews and or Robinson to move up as they have already committed to taking Clowney at 2. To your point if the Rams don't value Matthews and or Robinson worthy of moving up and believe they can coach up players then I agree 100% with you. The best play is to stay at 13. If Matthews is that can't miss ten year plug and play OT that can anchor our line and they feel they have to get him makes sense.

Re: In this mock the Rams get both Matthews and Clowney

I believe Matthews is the best OT in the draft and a viable option for the Rams at No. 2.

It does not follow, though, that I'd give up two draft choices to obtain him at No. 6.

The Rams have several holes to fill. There is no circumstance in which I'd wish to reduce the number of Top 50 selections the Rams have. If anything, I'm hoping to increase that number from 3 selections to 4 or 5.

Not really the point of this mock. Nick just did a mock on how to parlay draft picks.

Nick's mock involved "trade down" options. You are suggesting a "trade up" (#13 and #44 for #6) option.

I'd vote "no" on that one.

I think a lot of fans will would be fine with those OTs at 13.

I'm not very with the "trading up". Plus, I don't think Matthews is that special that I'd trade up. I'd rather trade down from #13 to the 20's and grab an extra 2nd and 3rd..

I'd rather trade down from both spots to secure more picks then have the Rams trade up. There's going to be good prospects in the 2nd round and I want to grab as many of them as we can get

I think this is a trade down or pick a player year for the Rams. I wouldn't want to trade up.

Ditto...Pick Clowney at #2 or trade down not past #6 and take Robinson, Matthews or maybe Watkins...
