The more things change the more they stay the same...
Defense still wins championships.
Lots of high power offenses in this years playoff. The Patriots, Packers, Falcons, and Texans. Lots of HYPE of the Pistol and how to stop it.
Bottom line the 2 best Defense in the playoffs are playing next Sunday.
That is why I hope the Rams grab a playmaking safety this year.
Go Rams

Not to burst your bubble because I see where you are going and do agree you need a good defense to win, but the Ravens weren't even close to being the second best defense in the playoffs, I dont even think they were in the top 5 of defenses in the playoffs.
The *****, Seahawks, Bengals, Texans and Broncos all had better defenses.
Baltimore got in by their offense, not their defense.

I agree with that defenses still win championships. You know what they say about defense it travels. Both the Ravens and the whiners where on the road. The Ravens held the Pats to 13 points and the whiners held the Falcons scoreless in the second half.
Sure the Ravens where not the best defenses during the year but they where missing Lewis and Terrell Suggs. Both are back and having had an impact.

Re: The more things change the more they stay the same...
Your right during the season they did not. But during the playoffs when significant players got healthy they did perform as a top defense. That was my point. I never said they were rank as a top defense during the season.
The Ravens held the Broncos and Peyton Manning. The score was high scoring but was a result of poor specail team play. The D did its job. The D also shut out Brady in the 2nd half and held the Pats to 13 points.

I agree that both defenses are 2 of the stronger in the NFL....
BUT I THINK THE MORE COMMON THREAD IS THE OFFENSIVE LINES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2 OF THE MOST PHYSICAL OFFENSIVE LINES IN THE LEAGUE -- AND PLENTY OF WEAPONS AROUND THEM....
^^THOSE ARE YOUR ANSWERS^^

On these two teams you can point to a wide variety of stuff, and what it all comes down to is that both teams have talent at many positions, and have plenty of depth. All-in-all they are well-rounded football clubs on both sides of the ball.
Also defenses are still struggling to adapt to the read-option offense. Might take a couple more season before they figure out how to contain it.

Re: The more things change the more they stay the same...
When a team makes it to the Super Bowl, they have talent on both sides of the ball with players that consistently perform on a high level.
It's not a "defense v. offense: choose one" type deal. These teams are dominant on both sides of the ball."The potential in our lives far exceeds what we ordinarily imagine."
